Am looking for a hostel or low price hotel to stay in Rome/ must be clean. Private room with bathroom facilities preferred. over age 55.
I stayed at the Hotel Borromeo in Rome, location is very good. Price was moderate, room was clean and spacious, included light breakfast. Single rate 60-100 euro in off season more in summer. Easy to walk to all the sights. Hotel is on a busy street, but not to noisey. Close to the train station as well
Check out the website for Domus Aurelia www.domusaurelia.com I found it clean and very convenient.

Carol, try hotwire.com. all the rooms have private baths, and the price you see is the price you pay.
The only down part of hotwire is you do not know the hotel name until after you click it and pay.
I have not used any hotwire hotels for Rome, but my past few times in London I got the Hilton for $126 a night, and the Sharaton for $110 a night (tax included)
I sort the hotels by the lowest price, and then select the highest stars... usually 3 stars.
Carol, go to www.monasterystays.com - I found a convent near the vatican for Euro 65 for single person. The photos made the place look very attractive. You don't have to be catholic to stay at a religious guest house. Also, google convent stays in Italy, there are other web sites.
Check out the Beehive which is in Rick's book. I stayed and it was wonderful. The beehive is a hotel and hostel and is absolutely beautiful. I paid 20 euros per night and it was worth every penny. It's also owned and operated by an American family from California!!!
I just booked the Beehive (private room E70, the E20 refers to the dorm room beds) for DD and myself. I had another hotel booked for just over E100 a night but with the state of the dollar I was worried about having enough money left in my budget to eat!!!
I did Google the Beehive and found all sites having positive reviews. Plus, we are cat-loving vegetarians, too, so the 'vibe' feels good to me!
I stayed at and was really happy with Hotel Panda (http://www.pensionepanda.com/). Its' centrally located - 2 blocks from the Spanish Steps. I believe a private bath will cost 95 euro a night for a double - I stayed in a double with shared bath for something like 65 Euro a night. This hotel wasn't in the Rick Steves book - I believe I got it from my Let's Go! book. It was clean and nice and easy to find. No breakfast though, which isn't uncommon. Good luck in your selection!
