Recommended Guide in Capri

Hi all, we arrive by cruise ship in Naples 8a.m. & depart at 7p.m., so we have about 9 hours from about 9a.m. to 6p.m. to get to Carpi & back. We plan on catching the high speed ferry to Capri return. Can anyone recommend a reasonable guide to tour us around and up to Anacapri? Really not interested in the Blue Lagoon.

Thanks,
Jean

Jean, really, Capri is compact enough not to need a guide at all. With a little pre-reading and a map from the tourist info office when you get there, you shouldn't have any issues sightseeing on your own. Just give yourself plenty of time to get back to your ship, and don't go at all if the weather is rainy or very windy as the ferries can cancel if the seas are too choppy.

Understand, though, that by the time you get off the ship, get to the ferry port, wait for the next ferry and get to the island (ferries take abt. an hour) you could easily kill more than a couple of hours. Do the same in reverse and you won't have as much time on the island as you think you might.

You'd also mentioned in your previous "Biking in Rome" thread that you "have a mobility problem with walking"? Understand as well that the Capri villages and many other parts of the island are almost entirely pedestrianized so being able to do a fair amount of sightseeing on foot is really a necessity. Capri is not a destination which can be explored very well chiefly by vehicle so you might want to take that into consideration?

You could do a tour by taxi, the drivers as a rule do speak English. Look closely at what you might want to see, including stops to wander around or take pics. Then settle on a price.

Taxis
Taxis are available at the port and in the town centers, but can also be hailed along the road or by telephone. Taxi drivers on Capri are usually friendly and courteous, and are often excellent de facto guides for visitors who have little time and want to see the sights on the island of Capri in as little time as possible.
Taxis carry 7 passengers and are often open-top, for a great island experience. Throw on a scarf and sunglasses and feel like a Hollywood star! Fares are metered, though there are fixed fares for common routes. For a ride around the entire island, you can bargain with the driver to come up with a rate depending upon the season, the length of ride, route, and number of passengers.
How much does a taxi cost on Capri?

The trip from the port to the center of Capri costs about €20, including bags. Island taxis can transport up to 6 people. If you are travelling in a small group, it's cost-effective to book a taxi. Here are all the fares for taxis on Capri:
Taxi Fares Capri
Taxi Fares Anacapri

Thanks Kathy; I do have some mobility problems because of my pinched spinal cord but I think gerri's right a tour with a taxi would be the way to go as I can get out and walk around some but not the whole time.
Gerri, there are 4 of us seniors so we could hire a cab at the port to drive us around; what type of tour (what to see etc.) should I ask the taxi to see; could we do Capri & Anacapri in this time frame? Assuming we arrive at Capri Port at approx. 11a.m. or earlier and catch the ferry back to Naples at 4p.m. arriving by 5-5:30 for a 7p.m. departure, we'd have 5 hours to tour. What do you think a fair price would be for this taxi?
Thank you,
Jean
