Recommendations Tuscany 7 Bologna

Planning a trip in September air tickets purchased, have not committed to hotels yet. Need to this week or so here is our rough plans... Fly into Bologna - 4 Days (we have never been in this area-love food!) Florence - 2 Days (Have been to Florence before) rent a car Tuscany 3 or 4 nights then train to Rome (we love Rome)
Rome 3 or 4 nights then fly home Any recommendations about what you like to do around Bologna is appreciated assume some day trips by train to Parma and so forth Also, when in Tuscany we would like to find a good base (so not spending too much time driving) to see Siena and Lucca. Perhaps one day just driving and exploring the countryside and visiting vineyards/wine tasting. Recommendations on location to stay in Tuscany? Places to see off the beaten path? Thanks so much in advance Connie

From BO you can easily visit Parma, Ferrara and Ravenna by train. Lucca is more easily visited by bus or train from Florence (no car needed to visit Lucca). Same applies to Siena, no car needed to visit Siena. The other small towns of Tuscany are more easily visited by car. I recommend a location near Colle Val d'Elsa or anywhere along the FI-SI freeway between Impruneta and Monteriggioni. The closer to freeways the faster you can day trip to places.

This is one of the things that I plan to do in Bologna when we visit: http://www.italiandays.it/index.asp I read great reviews on Trip Advisor about it. We are SO excited. It's an all day event so that would consume one of your 4 days. Cheers!
