I will be in Italy in June with a girlfriend and would like to see Umbria (Ovieto, Perugia, Asissi, ??) before heading to Salerno. We have about 4 days to spend in Umbria and am debating whether to rent an apartment or stay in two towns near one another. Any recommendations?

I would stay in one place and day trip. Assisi itself has two full days of sightseeing. You can easily go to Spello (very cute), Spoleto, and Perugia by train. (Actually bus is better for Spello and easy to do.)
We spent 5 nights in the Brigolante apartments last fall. Rebecca (American) is a terrific host and the apartments are well-located.

I spent a few nights in Perugia once and took day trips to Assisi and Gubbio. Looks like Orvieto is a two hour train ride from Perugia - just barely in day trip range.
I enjoyed Perugia - didn't realize it was a hill town (or hill city) until I got there.
