I will be in Venice at the beginning of November and want to purchase Murano glass to be shipped home ( NYC). Does anyone have any recommendations as to the "better" or "best" shops to look at, or are they all good? I am planning on going to the island of Murano The morning after I arrive.
I don't know if it was the best, but i would recommend a visit. It was the only one we visited. Very beautiful and fancy pieces from about €3 - €30,000.
Our hotel arranged a free water taxi ride paid by the gallery. You should ask if your hotel can do the same. The water taxi ride from our hotel to Murano was a treat. There was a glass blowing demo with a tour of the gallery. No hard sell. The sales people were very professional and politely explained how items are made and can be insured and shipped. You will have to take a vaporetto home on your own. Maybe if we bought a €30,000 piece, they would have sprung for the return water taxi. When you walk out of the gallery and go 50 yards around the corner, you can find other glass shops selling similar small glass souvenirs at lower prices than in the gallery or at San Marco, but nothing fancy.
I buy my Murano glass from Atmosfera Veneziana on Calle dei Fuseri, close to Piazza San Marco, just off Campo San Luca. They only carry Murano glass, absolutely no Chinese made ones. And they do ship.
Not all glass for sale in Murano are made there, so beware. I would suggest that you do your research and know prices . Some of the showroom are almost like buying a car from a dealership - prices are inflated so that they can offer you a discount.
Have fun shopping.
