We are planning to see Sicily in late April, 2018. We will rent a car and have about a week. Any recommendations for where to stay?
We've heard that Il Vecchio Frantoio, featured in one of Rick Steve's videos, is closed due to a mudslide on the highway...anyone know more about this?

Are you arriving by flight? If so, you'll need to decide on Catania or Palermo as a starting point. You may be able to get a 1-way car rental. Several years ago, we rented a car for 10 days from Palermo and focused on the west and southern coast, but we wanted some beach time. As for coastal spots we really liked Scopello and Marinella di Selunte (sp). I hear wondrful thing about Syracuse and places in the east.
Don't try to see Sicily in a week. If you really have that little time and must go to Sicily on this trip, get hold of a good guidebook, make a list of what you'd like to see, then pull out a map to figure out what you can accomplish from one or at most two bases.
ViaMichelin.com is good for estimating driving times but is said to be optimistic, so build in a buffer. Don't forget to allow time for finding parking at each stop and walking from the parking area to what you want to see.
