I am planning to take my second trip to Italy. The first time, we had 12 days and concentrated on northern Italy: Milan (1 day), Florence (4 days), Siena (2 days), Venice (2 days), La Spezia and Cinque Terra (1 day) and Rome (2 days).
For my second trip, I feel like I need more time to 'finish' Rome, as I felt like the 2 days I spent the first time was not enough...I also want to see the Amalfi Coast and other southern Italy sites.
Can anyone provide a sample itinerary for my 7 days?
You could stay in Rome the whole 7 days and not 'finish' it. We're hopefully doing this next February/March, just staying in Rome nine nights with maybe a daytrip to Orvieto, an hour plus away.
When are you going? Time of year will dictate your plans for this short trip. You would be doing well to spend 3 days in Rome, then train down to the Amalfi Coast for the balance, daytripping to Naples and/or Pompeii, and flying out of Naples. Even with that you'll be doing a fair amount of running around.
Rome 4 nights , train to Sorrento 3 nights. You can see Pompeii 1 day, Capri, Blue grotto 1 day and two of the others in one day. A morning in Amalfi and afternoon / evening Positano or Ravello. You will be exhausted but don't forget your in Italy it's well worth it.

Rome 2 NIghts, Train to Naples spend rest of time as Naples for your base. Day trip to Pompeii, Capri, Amalfi Coast...fly out of Naples or go back to Rome.
