Recommendations for reputable tour companies in Venice

We'll be in Venice Oct. 8-11 and want to take a quality tour through the canals and also a walking tour. I haven't found a tour company that has especially great reviews.

Hit me with your fave tour companies in Venice, please. We'll need to be with a group so as to stay within our budget. (We're not interested in any food tours.) Thanks!

Venicescapes! These are serious tours, focusing on different aspects of Venetian culture and history.

We did one of their tours last year, "Story of a Mercantile Empire," and plan to do another next year. Excellent, well researched, and the guide will work with you to fit your own needs and background. Highly recommended. The price varies with the tour and the number of people on the tour. Here's the price for the one we took last year:

Price: €320.00 (euro) for two (2) persons. Each additional adult
costs €60.00. Minors under the age of 18 cost €30.00 each.
Incidental transportation costs and entrance fees are not included.

Price includes one (1) copy of Venicescapes’ timeline “The Republic
of Venice”. Additional copies are available at €15.00 per copy.

I saw some random negative reviews of The Roman Guy, but I'll revisit him on your recommendation. Thanks!

Second vote for Venicescapes. The Mercantile Empire tour is absolutely amazing. It’s well researched and organized - the kind of tour that can only be done by a foreigner (I.e. an outsider like you/us) who really knows the local culture well.

Thank you, HK! This company sounds like it really has its act together.

alesagrrr, we did four tours with The Roman Guy: the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica, the Capuchin Crypts and the Catacombs, Pompeii and Sorrento, and the Venice one (St. Mark's, walking tour, and gondola ride). All of them were excellent.

We had initially booked two tours with them for May 2020. Then, of course, we were unable to travel then. When I contacted TRG to cancel, they offered me the option of postponing, with a credit towards other tours. I took this option, as I recognized that the tour companies were struggling to survive with all the cancellations. So, when we rebooked for 2020, we were able to add on the Capuchin crypts etc, as well as the tour in Venice with our credit. We hadn't initially planned to book a tour in Venice or to take a gondola ride, but we were really glad we did, and we were impressed with both the handling of the situation, the way the company honoured their word, and the tours and guides, themselves.
