Recommendations for Lucca with kids

we are traveling with 4 young kids and have heard this is a very family friendly destination. Anyone have any recommendations as to where to stay, where to eat and fun activities and day trips with kids.

Thanks!

Don't know how "young" the children are but you and rent bicycles (I've seen them with child carrier seats) and ride around the top of the city wall. There are also several tall towers to climb with great views of the city.
One of the towers even had a tree growing on the top.
There are also a couple of small parks in side the walls and large grassy areas outside the walls for kids to run around the play.
You might search on the internet for things to do in Lucca .
I saw lots of kids when I was there and they all seemed to really enjoy the city.

just looked up this link:

What time of year are you travelling? Summer days and even the shoulder seasons can be very hot and it helps to rent a vacation apartment with access to a pool. That allowed us to do some sight seeing during the day with the kids and then come back and jump into the water.

Would you recommend Lucca as a base for exploring or would you just settle in and enjoy Lucca?
We are coming from Venice and headed to Rome.

We were in Lucca last month with our boys, 9 and 11. We were only there 2 nights - arrived around 2pm on Tuesday, left Thursday morning. It's a super small town and easy to navigate. We rented bikes the first afternoon, rode around the wall, climbed the tree tower, stopped at a playground where a real ice cream man - I guess I should say gelato man - came by scooping fresh gelato (none of that spongebob popsicle crap we have here!)... Dinner at Trattoria de leo which was good.

Next day, train to Pisa which was great. Back and rented surrey bike around wall, dinner. We also hit the torture museum which was expensive and small, but well done. Freaked the boys out, so I liked that!

Would have liked another day to just relax at the park...

We stayed at Il Seminario B&B which was nice.

Have fun! Lucca was great!

Have used Lucca as a base twice. Love it. I always stay inside the walls. Bike rides along the ramparts have been mentioned. We also did a picnic along the wall...there are plenty of benches and places to accomodate this. There is a park with a merry go round they might like too. Great pizza place there..m'brianna (spelling?). I did a great 1/2 day cooking class there. Don't know if your kids are into cooking...you say "young" so I don't know if this would be something they would enjoy or not. via fullingo is the shopping street in Lucca. It is an easy town to walk in as it is flat and not too large.

We are staying near the historic center inside the walls. We are excited to bike ride and visit the community pools. We would love info on the cooking classes. My kids are 13,11,8 and 6. I think they would like it. I am getting so excited now!
