My husband and I are flying into Rome in early October and are staying one night before going on to other locations. I'd like to get recommendations for an area, (and/or a small romantic hotel too) to stay at in Rome that is central to many sights. We've never been to Rome and know that we won't be able to see much, but are hoping we can walk and take some transportation to enjoy the flavor and scenery of the city. Thanks!
What a shame you're only spending one night in such an important travel city that's worthy of a minimum 4 day stay.
You should consider staying around the Pantheon for a central location for walking and good restaurants.
Hotel Palazzo Navona is between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, a perfect location for your too short stay. Walkable to many of the historic sites.
Since you didn’t specify a price point, go big and stay at Grand Hotel de la Minerve. It’s around the corner from the pantheon. Last time we were in Rome we stayed at a hotel by Campo de’ Fiore. Most major sites are within a short walk from it.
Hello,
For starters, I like to suggest looking at https://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/lazio.html
You will get a sneak peek into the major piazzas of Rome.
For what you are looking for - check into the area of:
Piazza Navona
Campo de' Fiori
Fontana di Trevi
As noted above in a couple of posts, Piazza della Rotonda (The Pantheon) is a nice area also. *
On another thread or two, there were recommendations about nice hotels.
I stayed in the Termini area on my trips to Rome. lol. Not especially romantic, but still active and lively.
This one https://www.hotelcampodefiori.com/en/ was recommended by Jay of Chicago He has stayed there at the hotel and at a small studio apartment.
Then, there is this boutique hotel https://www.boutiquehoteltrevi.it/it/ (very near to Trevi Fountain)

Hotel Smeraldo is a lovely little hotel just a couple of blocks from the Pantheon and an easy walk to the Trevi fountain and other great sites. They have a fabulous breakfast and charming rooftop bar and the front desk staff were great.
Hotel Smeraldo is where we stayed n 2012. It is small, but I didn’t find it especially romantic. I referred to it as a no frills hotel in my TripAdvisor review. The shower in our room was very small. I didn’t find the front desk staff to be overly helpful or friendly. Maybe it has gotten better since then. It’s also more than a couple blocks from the Pantheon, but very much within walking distance to it, and most main sights; 10 minutes to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and another 10-15 to get to Trevi Fountain.
We stayed at Hotel Palazzo Navona a few years ago. It is very nice and romantic. Great location
