We're going to be in Florence the end of June, but the recent reviews for a hotel that we've booked are mixed. So we are looking for a hotel specifically near Florence SM station. Any recommendations are appreciated!
I am making a return visit to Firenze this September , this is my hotel of choice - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hotel+Centrale/@43.7736936,11.2539812,18.61z/data=!4m7!3m6!1s0x132a54020df06baf:0x11f3fff148688a3!5m1!1s2018-05-17!8m2!3d43.7738799!4d11.2531053 Dead quiet , excellent breakfast and well air conditioned
We found Hotel Mario's very pleasant a couple of years ago. Convenient to the station, nice neighborhood ad we walked everywhere from here.
We stayed at the Hotel Delle Nazione last year, and it was pretty nice. 3 stars, so not too $ and very convenient to SMN. And not far from everything else too. We liked the breakfast and cappuccino machine.
What are your budget and amenity requirements?
Do you want a name on high end (4star) or low end (1 star) or in between (3star)?
3 star should be fine. Sometimes stars don't quite tell as much as guest reviews. It would be nice if the hotel provided a kettle for tea, but we don't have any other special requirements.
Hotel Rivoli Boutique......kettle, fridge, a/c, nice breakfast, decent wifi. It's a converted 14th century monestary.
Five minute walk to the train station. Ten to fifteen to the center of the main sights. I walked from the Uffizi to the hotel today in under 15 minutes.
FYI--kettles are hard to find in Italy.
We like the three star property called Mario's Hotel on Via Faenza and the four star Hotel Albani Firenze on Via Fiume, Both places are just a few streets from the train station.
Buon viaggio,
The Rivoli suggested above would be my top choice. However I think it’s a 4star, therefore it might be a bit pricier. Check it out and if the deal is good on your dates grab it fast.
Otherwise on the same street there is the Alba Palace, Which might be a bit less. In this same category check also the Hotel City on Via Sant’Antonino, closer to the San Lorenzo Market, but a 3 min walk from the station.
Whatever you do stay away from Via della Scala northwest of Via dell’Albero or Via Alamanni, also stay away from Via Nazionale. Lots of buses on all, therefore noisy if they give you a room facing the road. I would also avoid any hotel right at the Piazza Stazione for the same reasons.
Andy,
It would help to have some idea which hotel you were originally planning to book, so that I don't suggest the same one.
THIS hotel is reasonably close to the station, but not sure if it fits your price criteria.
Luxor at SMN
Thanks, all! I checked out all the hotels that you recommended. Of the ones that were available for the dates that we need, the Luxor clearly appeared to be the best in our price range, but about 10 minutes away. I don't know if the Luxor's proximity to train tracks presents a noise problem. A co worker suggested the Hotel Ester (she was there a couple of years ago), which is 3 minutes from the station. Anyone that has recent experience with the Ester?
You wanted near the station, then you choose a hotel that is just as far as Piazza San Lorenzo, just in the opposite direction.
This is where I slept when I was working the nights at SMN. Not too far from the Luxor. On Via Luigi Alamanni

It’s noisy there at night. Trains traveling on tracks, trains whistling, incessant car traffic on Via Alamanni and Viale Rosselli, and actually not a short walk to the station (and I could cut through by walking over the tracks, you will get cited for doing that). Hopefully the Luxor has good noise insulation or they give you a room facing the opposite side of the tracks.
We stayed here a year and a half ago. It was pretty luxurious and perfectly located.

We walked from the train station to the hotel. The breakfast was fantastic. We loved the piazza Santa Maria Novella and there were actually several nice hotels on the piazza. Our room had a view of the duomo.
