I have seen the Coliseum, but want to focus on the Forum this trip and am willing to spend more for a good guide for historic, of course, but particularly architecture. thanks much
Sonia Tavoletta does an excellent job in the Forum. She will customize to meet your desires. [email protected].
We spent a magical half day with Daniella Hunt of Mirabilia Urbis Tours, and did the Forum along with the houses of Augustus and Livia. I couldn't possibly recommend her more highly, as she combines enthusiasm and knowledge with a manner of presenting the information that keeps you engaged and doesn't feel like a lecture.
Her website is rome-tours.com
Private guides aren't cheap, but we learned the hard way that all you guarantee yourself with a bigger group tour is a crowd everywhere you go. The Forum is particularly hard to wrap your head around, as it's bits and pieces from a millennia of history. Daniella did a great job of helping to visualize how it all fit together. I know I sound like I'm being over the top, but the tour with her really was the highlight of our trip. We'll be doing one of the Pantheon and central Rome with her again next March...
Another to consider is Alessio Vicari Tours. Find him on facebook.
Our neighbors took their first trip to Europe and loved him for two of their days in Rome.
I can enthusiastically second the recommendation of Daniella Hunt.
On my first trip to Italy, my daughter and I hired her for Colosseum and Roman Forum one day, and then the Vatican Museums the next. She was able to tie the two days together through history, art and architecture. That meant a laser like focus at the museums with items and works that were relateable to what we had seen /learned the previous day, instead of wandering without specific purpose through the miles and miles of corridors that are the Vatican Museums.
I would be hiring her again on my trip at the end of this month except she was already booked for the days I will be in Rome.
