Recommendations for a day trip from Florence to Rome to visit the Vatican Museum

We are a group of 6 and we will be staying in Florence next July for a week and would like to take a day trip from Florence to Rome to visit the Vatican Museum and St Peter's. I would like to take advantage of an early morning guided tour of the Vatican Museum, I believe they start at 8am. Trains from Florence to Rome do not run early enough for me to get there in time for this early tour and so I am debating whether to arrive in Rome the evening before or hire a driver guide to take us very early in the morning from Florence to the Vatican.

While I am one to recommend the early morning Vatican tours, i don't know that i would do so at the expense of interrupting your week in Firenze by spending one night in Rome. Are you flying out of Rome? Can you do yhe Vatican tour at the end of your trip the day before you fly, spending your last two nights in Rome?

The private driver is a good idea, but likely at a cost of €200-250.

Thanks for your reply, I would prefer to hire a car and driver for the day for this day trip and maybe stop in Orvieto on the way back to Florence. Any recommendations for a company that would offer this service?

Please note that driving to Rome is slower than riding a train - the train travels up to 200 km/h (that's 125 mph) and you simply cannot do it with a car. If you want to be in central Rome at 8am you should leave Florence with your car at 4am, but 3.30am would be better. Probably spending the night in Rome is more convenient.
