Recommendations for 3 nights in Italy

We are going on the Best of Tuscany tour in April and then headed to a wedding in Lubriano for a few days. We have 3 days before flying home from Rome. Should we go to Rome (have been there before) or is there another town that we should visit?

I am sure Rome has a never ending list of things to offer, but what do you want to do? Do you like smaller towns? How do you feel about driving? How are you getting to Lubriano? It is close to Orvieto, which is very popular on this forum. It is also close to my favorite area, the Maremma of southern Tuscany. Pitigliano is lovely.

We have seen the Vatican and the popular attractions in Rome on a previous trip. I know there is much to do in Rome and interested to hear if there is something we should not miss. We love walking the neighborhoods, going to museums and good restaurants.

Our Tuscany trip ends in Lucca and we are taking the train to Orvieto and getting a ride to Lubriano (20 minutes away). We will be leaving Lubriano April 27 and have 3 nights before our flight home on April 30. We plan to take the train. I know it is the Jubilee year and wondering if we should stay in one of the smaller towns for 2 nights outside Rome and stay 1 night at a hotel near the airport for our return flight. If we stay in Rome 3 nights which area of the city would be best? Pantheon, Trastevere or near Termini station.

I can't answer Rome qs, but without a car I think that would be your best bet as you would not have to split your stay--no need to stay at airport.
With a car and a not-early flight, there are more options to stay three nights in a smaller town.

You could put together some sort of tour around the area. There are several open air hot springs in Tuscany. You could visit Bolsena on the lake then visit Cascate del Mulino and Terme di Saturnia. I would say Bolsena is worth about half a day, and if you have a car you could have the other half at the spa. There are some lovely things to see and good food to be had in Bolsena and Saturnia. You could probably find a winery nearby you can stay at overnight.

From there you could go on to Rome a little early so you don't have to rush to make your flight. Have you seen Ostia Antica? I stayed at the hotel near the airport last visit and went to see Ostia Antica my last full day in Italy. I had a lovely morning and enjoyed the picnic I'd brought with me for lunch there.

Have you been to Pompeii? Sorrento? You might do two nights in Sorrento with the full day used for Pompeii and then head back to Rome and stay at the airport Hllton for the flight home the next day. We did this on a previous trip (except our extra days were in Barcelona and then we flew into FCO and stayed there, going into Trastevere for dinner on the tram)
