Recommendations before & after Village Italy in May 2025

Hello all. I would love some input, advice, recommendations for our pre and post Village Italy trip in May. We plan on arriving 2 -3 days before the tour begins and staying in Padua, acclimating, walking around and seeing the sites not included in the tour. In addition, if we chose only one day trip, which comes with higher recommendation: Verona or Vicenza? (Not interested in the fictional Romeo and Juliet sites). Or should we do both cities? Or venture further to Bologna? We are keen on history, like museums and gardens, absorbing the local culture, and eating :) authentic food, enjoying the wine and coffee culture; are in good shape and can walk for hours. Excuse me as I'm not as well read as I need to be at this point in time for planning.

Next question deals with the back-end of the trip in Lago d'Orta--should we stay an additional night there or head to Lake Como or Maggiore? I've read several posts about the lakes and they all sound beautiful. Hubby has his mind set on Como. If that ends up our destination, is there a preferred town to stay? They all seem to offer different vibes. Of note, we do not plan on renting a car, so train, bus, ferry will be the methods of transport. Current idea is 2-3 days in the lake region for experiencing and relaxing before heading to Milan and flying to Barcelona for a 3 day visit.
I appreciate your thoughts and input on this region we've not visited. Ciao!

Following this topic…interested in this trip in the future. Wanting to add Florence…trying to figure out which end of the trip!

I’m doing this trip in April and I’m flying in 6 days early to Bologna. Spending 4 nights in Bologna, then 2 nights in Padua before the tour starts. Then I’m adding 5 nights in Milan after the tour ends. So I’m flying into Bologna and out of Milan. I fly American out of DFW through LHR coming and leaving Italy.

Did the Village Italy tour last spring, great experience. At least half of the people on our tour, including us, visited Venice for a few days before tour start in Padua. And a post tour visit to Lake Como is also popular. We stayed in Varenna because it is easily accessible by train from Milan and a RS favorite. Easy to make day trips to other sites using the ferry system on Lake Como. You can’t go wrong with 3 days in Venice pre-tour and 3 days in Varenna post-tour. Fly into Venice and out of Milan.

We were on the tour last fall. The time the tour spends in Lago d'Orta is sufficient, I can't imagine what you could do there with an additional day.

Definitely give yourselves time in Padua, especially if you are interested in the Botanical Gardens (really...go here even if you are not a garden person, lol!!).

I gave us (brother, SIL and myself) an extra night in Orta and it was too much. We were done by noon and should have gone on in to Milano.

Have you been to Venice? We spent 3 nights in Venice beforehand but I did not give us extra time in Padua which was an error on my part.

Lake Maggiore is easier to get to from Orta than Lake Como.

Your tour guide will get information from each traveler on where they are headed and group you together for taxis/vans in that direction.

Thank you for all the replies. Since my original posting, we've done more reading/investigating and planning.

Simpgolf and Lyndash, we have previously spent a few days each in Milan and Venice, as well as a few other locations in Italy. Loved them all, but Firenze is a favorite. This time we will be in Padua for a few days and venture to Verona for a day trip.

Pam, I agree that it seems there is much to experience in Padua, so no extra side trip to Bologna. Our tour will have us on the go enough, it's best to start slow and enjoy the atmosphere. John and Pam, we are not extending our stay in Lago d' Orta, as others have also recommended-- decided to go to Lake Maggiore for a couple days relaxation time in Stresa over hubby's birthday. It seems to be easy to get to, plus the bus direct from Stresa to Milan-Malpensa is an added benefit.

There are so many interesting and beautiful destinations, it is very hard to choose. I appreciate all the suggestions from this esteemed group of travelers!

I too am on the Village Italy Tour in May ‘25. We’ve never been to Venice so spending 3 nights there and at the end, 2 extra nights at Lake Orta- with plans to see Milan on day trips. Good plan? We enjoy cities and want to see the Last Supper in Milan. Milan Vs Lake Como?

I’d stay 2 nights in Milan rather than extra time at Lake Orta

If you have question/ need help with your itinerary it’s best to start your own thread

You will need to get your Last Supper tix the minute they go on sale

Last year I spent a week in Venice (third visit) before training to Padua the morning the tour started. Since it's only a 1/2 ride, it gave me 1/2 a day there to explore before the tour meet-up. For me that and the tour time were plenty. I had planned a day trip to Verona but decided to explore more of Venice since it was Historical Regata weekend.

An extra day in Orta would not be my choice. While pretty, there is not much to see or do. Afterwards I went to Florence (first visit) for three + two 1/2 days before heading to Rome for five nights and then home. Since I prefer museums, the lake region would not be my choice. Several tour mates went there and loved it. If you go to Florence, try to get tickets to the Michelangelo drawings at Medici Chapel. They are very limited but well worth the visit.

Village Italy is a great tour. Buon Viaggio!

We did the tour last Sept/Oct. we’ve already been to Venice so we spent extra time before the tour in Verona and I’m glad we did. After the tour we spent an extra night at Lake Orta, very peaceful before the long haul home.

We were on this tour last May. The Saturday market in Padua is quite wonderful. We enjoyed spending an extra day enjoying the market, taking a tour of the astronomical clock tower, and savoring caffe Pedrocchi’s famous mint chocolate coffee. (Having spent time in Venice previously, we chose to spend 6 days in Rome — then traveled by train to Padua)

We found Lake Orta to be the only disappointing stop on an otherwise excellent tour. I’m really not sure why the tour goes there. I’m so glad we chose to go to Stresa/Lake Maggiore after our tour. There’s much more to see and do, plus the direct bus to the Milan Airport made the end of the trip very easy. We splurged on a 2 room suite overlooking the lake at La Luna Nel Porto, which I highly recommend.
