Recommendation: When in Rome, visit Palazzo Doria Pamphilj (not in Rick's book)

We just returned from a week in Rome with the family (two kids age 10 and 13).

Palazzo Doria Pamphilj was one of our highlights but it was not in Rick's book.
It is highly recommended and contains:

-Velasquez' Innocent X

-Bernini busts of Innocent X

-Caravaggio paintings

-many other paintings

Besides art, you can also walk through the palace apartments, which feel like a mini-Versailles.

The audioguide is free and had compelling narration.

Very impressive and a great option for a rainy day.

Thanks for the input! I will definitely include it in my Rome's bucket list next time I'm there. Is it more interesting for younger or older travelers?

We also visited this Palazzo when we were in Rome. Most people walk right past it on the way to the “wedding cake”. The owners still live there and they have a lovely cafe if you want some coffee and cake. More interesting for older people I think, lots of art and sculptures.

Thank you for this! I am not sure we will have time for it, but I am very happy to know that it is there. :o)

Thank you for this recommendation! Will be in Rome, soon, and looking for calmer sites and museums that I have not previously visited. Sounds lovely!

Indeed, and excellent gallery with a great collection. It is covered by many other guidebooks.

I agree with the OP that the Doria Pamphilj is a wonderful museum. However, it is listed in the Rome guidebook, just not in the full Italy book.

The Palazzo is a wonderful experience. One of the things I love most is that on the Innocent X bust, Bernini left one of the buttons on his cloak unbuttoned. I would so love to know why!
