Recommendation re: Car Rentals - Tuscany/Umbria/Salerno leg of trip?

I will be traveling from Tuscany (Florence) to Umbria (Assisi) with a friend. We are thinking about renting a car as we leave Florence, driving to either Orvieto or Siena for a day trip and then heading to our destination in Umbria (Assisi). We will use the car for the 4 days we are staying in Umbria before heading to Salerno.

Does anyone have recommendations for car rental agencies? I understand Hertz and HolidayAutos rent for pickup/drop off at different locations.

Does anyone have any experience returning a car in Umbria? We were thinking returning at the Perugia railway station or somewhere close to Assisi as we are taking the train to Salerno.

Is it advisable to drive to Salerno or better to take the train?

We have used a broker in the US for all of our car rentals in Europe, multiple times. They work with many car rental agencies. www.AutoEurope.com. It is a good idea to have a car to explore Umbria.
This is a good website that will answer many of your questions but you can call them directly too, located in Portland, Maine. Don't miss pretty Spello.
We drove from Umbria to Naples on the autostrada and it was easy. How will you use the car in Salerno? Or are you dropping it off there? You don't not want a car on the Amalfi Coast.

Thank you for the advice. I am not using a car in Salerno. I would drop it there. I have been to the Amalfi Coast and know better than to try driving in that area.
