Recommendation for Your Tour Guide in Orvieto

We just had a tour of Orvieto with Manuela and can’t recommend her enough! She was one of the guides recommended in the Rick Steve’s guide. Manuela was a terrific communicator, flexible in how/when she met up with us, speaks excellent English and she was very knowledgeable (really made history come alive).

If you are looking for a guide to help you appreciate the beautiful city of Orvieto you will be happy with Manuela.

We paid 140 euros for a 2.5 hr tour. Our plans worked out well; arrived to Or into in the Am and explored the weekly market (mostly grocery items), went to the darling local shops while they were open, had a leisurely lunch and then did the tour after lunch while a number of shops had closed for the afternoon break.

She was very flexible with plans, especially since one of our group was not very mobile. She would provide information and then those of us who wished to see the subject could walk to it. She also met us at the restaurant after lunch, which made it easy to find each other.

She showed us the market area, the 4 quadrants of the medieval town, some fantastic local artisans with good prices (especially the olive wood carver), the sights along the city wall edge and then an in-depth visit to the duomo where she explained the artwork, etc (we paid the minimal duomo entry fee ourselves).

Orvieto is not a big town but we gained so much appreciation and knowledge from “seeing” it through Manuela’s explanations. There is a reason that, from all the local guides, she was the one that the city asked to take Rick Steves around town.

I love Orvieto, but if you have never been there, you may not realize what a small town it is. I can walk every street in about 20 minutes.

Reading about the history of the incredible Duomo, one of my favorites in Italy gives me the background to appreciate. I love to read prior to my walking around, it gives me a context to appreciate.
For example, the Germans actually spared the Duomo from bombing, Of course the railway at the bottom was destroyed but the Duomo was spared.
I did have a local guide to go in the underground of Orvieto,I believe it is required for entry.

I'm a big walker, but I certainly couldn't walk every street in town in 20 minutes! That's about how long it would take (with no navigational errors) to walk the length of the upper (historic) town from east to west; it's roughly one mile. That's just the equivalent of one street! I have no idea how many miles of streets there are in the upper town--six? eight?

I enjoyed a walking tour offered by the tourist office back in 2015.
