Staying in Venice 2 night with family of 5 people. Can anyone recommend a hotel? Reasonable, clean, on a canal.
At that time of the year, add air conditioning to your list of requirements. It's peak season and I hesitate to make any suggestions other than places away from the Grand Canal may be a little less expensive. Hotels are low rise, like everything else except steeples, so scenic vistas from the bedrooms are not common.
love Hotel Galleria right on the Grand Canal and amazingly priced. Not sure on the air conditioning since I have been there in the spring before that becomes an issue, but I would stay no where else.
They beat me to it. With such humidity, Venice hotel prerequisites are a great a/c system.
I've stayed in hotels there with 10 watt light bulbs and optional hot water showers. You cannot take anything for granted in that city.
Just be careful. See Booking.com for hotels anywhere in the world.
First, few people want to stay at an unreasonably priced hotel. Define "reasonable" in euros or dollars for better recommendations.
And definitely get a place with AC. (The two places we've stayed before don't have it, so I can't recommend them for July, even though they were perfect for May.)
I'm not sure what their current price is but I stayed in Albergo Doge a few years ago. It wasn't anything incredibly special, but it was clean and had air conditioning. They report they have a family apartment across the street from the hotel - I would email them about that if you are interested.
In July, you may encounter minimum night stays at many places. Not uncommon to see 2 or 3 night minimum stays in the high season. You might look at the Hotel Santa Lucia near the train station. It's a very reasonable 1-star hotel but it says the following in their webpage:
"There are singles, doubles, matrimonial, triples and family rooms available (with four beds) ideal for families and small groups of friends, which have satellite TV, telephone and air conditioning. 10 rooms face the garden and have a private bathroom with shower (hair dryer on request)."
Use www.venere.com or any similar website (www.booking.com, www.AirBnB.com, www.hotels.com etc.).
"Reasonable" is a subjective attribute, but prices are often roughly based on the number of stars the hotel gets according to the Regional law in place in Veneto (that's the region where Venice is). Stars are assigned based on amenities available in the hotel, not beauty or location.
When you see accommodations that meet your budget requirements plot them on a map to see their exact location. Any 'Sestiere' (district) in Venice is good but if you want a canal you need to see if the hotel is located on one.
Not all streets and alleys in Venice have canals. Streets without canals are called "calle" (plural: "calli"), streets with a canal are generally called "fondamenta". Campo or Campiello is a 'piazza' in Venice.
It is also a good idea to check the hotel reviews on 'tripadvisor' or even to look for hotels on tripadvisor.com. If you decide to book one tripadvisor will redirect to www.booking.com to check availability, prices and for booking.
A/C is essential in July. Also the top floor is hotter than lower floors. The ground floor is often not available because of flooding.
I stayed at Hotel Bel Sito and Berlino. It's both on a small piazza and a canal, close to San Marco. It was reasonable then. They did have some adjoining rooms and singles which were quite inexpensive. A great breakfast. They also very kindly recommended a lunch place that had picnic tables inside, and a point and choose hot/cold bar that was very reasonable and was seriously the best food we had in Venice. Wish I could remember the name. Sorry.
We stayed at Locanda Orseolo at the end of August 2013 & loved it. It sits on the Orseolo Canal just behind St. Mark's Square and many of the rooms have canal views. It was a lovely B&B and the A/C worked really well which was important in August! You can look at the ratings on Trip Advisor; it's the #1 rated B&B on TA & for good reason. We felt that the room rate was very reasonable considering we had a canal view and considering how nice the B&B is. If you can reserve a room at Locanda Orseolo, I would not think twice about staying there! Have a great trip!
Try http://www.cortecampana.com. It's a very nice B&B with 3 bedrooms within a few minutes walk from St Marco square. But it's not on a canal. We stayed there a couple of years ago and we're going there again this coming September. Recommended by RSteves, and probably less expensive than many in the area.
We've stayed twice at Pensione Guerrato and loved it. It's a big RS recommendation and is in several of his videos about Venice. I went to their website and could find nothing about A/C even though I thought I remembered an A/C unit in our room. But according to booking.com, they do have A/C there, so I strongly recommend Guerrato.
For years I've stayed at Hotel Ala (Giglio stop for the vaparetto) during the summer. I wouldn't consider any other place - having tried many of Rick's recommendations (ok but not what I "want" from Venice). Great location, easy to get anywhere, huge breakfast buffet to get your day started! That reminds me, time to make my reservation!
