Recommendation for riveria town, one night stay?

Hi—

I'm putting together a possible trip for my wife and I this September, and am looking for a place to break up a long train trip. I'm looking at towns on the Italian Riviera, between Genoa and Sanremo.

We'd probably get into this town in mid-afternoon, check in someplace, do a little walking and sightseeing, have dinner, sleep, and leave the next morning.

I'm looking for something non-touristy, reasonably charming or scenic, reasonably quiet, easy to hop off the train and back on.

Does this sound like someplace you've been or seen? Or, do you have a good approach to finding such a place? I've been walking through towns on the Maps app, zooming in on ones that have train stops, and looking at hotels and reviews, but I don't have a calibration for how large the towns are, how busy they'll be, etc.

Thanks for any help!

I haven’t been to this area, so I can’t advise on specific towns. But here is where I would start: Google Genoa (or wherever you’re coming from) to San Reno, look at the train schedules that would work for you, then see which towns the train stops at. Compare this to a map. If you want to be on the water, make a list of the stops at towns on the water. Then start researching these towns.

Just looking at Google maps, it appears Finale Ligure, Loano, or Albenga might fit your bill. Albenga appears to be fairly large and the city of 100 spires. Loano has an old ship museum if that is something that interests you. I've never been to this region so I can't comment on how busy any of them are. Perhaps a trip to your county library to study guide books or road trip books on the northwest Italy coast could help you.

There are many choices, but these are three choices which in my opinion are the best among those that are easily accessible by train (all 3 have a station). I would definitely select one of these. All 3 are very quaint pearls. I listed them in alphabetical order, but I like all three.

Finale Ligure and Finalborgo (next to each other, same train station in Finale)
Laigueglia
Noli

Do some Google search, look at their images, then decide what is best for you.

Thank you for the recommendations, especially Roberto.

It seems like this area of the coast could use some attention from a guidebook, or a blog series. Perhaps someday when I retire. 😀

Trust Roberto! He steered us to Noli in 2019 and we loved it! (Find the young and creamy gorganzola.)
