Recommendation for a town between Rome and Naples with easy connections to both

Hi, we are looking for a smaller town or city to stay for 8 days between Rome and Naples with easy connections as we won't have a car. I was originally thinking of staying in Naples but we really want a less hectic place. We plan on taking day trips to Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and maybe Capri. Any recommendations is appreciated.

It does not work well to stay between Rome and Naples because they are linked by a fast train that tales only an hour. If you intend to visit Rome too, you can split it between Rome and perhaps Salerno would work for you. It takes longer to get to Capri but you can visit all the rest from there and it is a much more compact city.

How many nights? Is there a reason that you want to be between Rome and Naples? You might consider Sorrento instead, for easier access to all those day trips, plus the possibility to visit the Amalfi coast.

As Valadelphia pointed out, locating yourself between Rome and Naples doesn't work as a base for both areas.

Thanks for the information. We will be in Rome for six days beforehand. I was thinking of Salerno as well. Thanks again.

I was thinking there was a nice town between the two cities but did not realize that the express trains probably went through them without stopping. We have been to Salerno and Sorrento and wanted to experience something similar but not on the coast.

I understand wanting a stay in a smaller, authentic interior town, but if wanting to visit Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and maybe Capri, you really need to be on the coast. Have you looked into some of the Amalfi Coast villages that are close to Salerno, like Cetara, Minori, Maiori, Vietri? In Vietri, you have option of bus, ferry, and train (though check to see if track work has been completed).

We have driven between Rome and Naples several times and other than having some good meals did not find a small town we would stay. We enjoyed visiting Cassino, but would not build a train journey around it.

Thank you for all the feedback. We are not going until October so we have time to fine tune our plans. Right now, we are deciding to stay in the Vomero section of Naples. I found an Airbnb apartment that hopefully is as described. The reviews were positive. It looks like it will be easy to do day trips from Naples.

Sounds like a great plan, and I think choosing a neighborhood stay will help provide a contrast to the overwhelm of Naples!

We were in Campania in January and based in Pompei. We had a car so it was easy to get to the archaeological sites, Sorrento and Positano, and we took the train into Naples to visit the museum. The town of Pompei seemed like a regular town, not quaint or pretty but a place where people live with a shopping / dining area, cathedral, town square, etc. if you don’t mind walking to get to the train stations I think you could use transit to get to the other places. Good luck!
