Recommendation: Catholic Church tours in Rome

Hello. I am looking for reliable and educational Catholic Church tours for Rome (visit this September). I trust Rick Steves' recommendation, however, Mondoguide doesn't offer this type of guided tour. If you have taken such a tour (e.g. visit by foot or via private/semi-private car), please offer names of tour companies or websites. Also, if you can mention pros and cons, that will be helpful too. Thank you.

It might help if you could describe what sort of "Catholic church tours" you are looking for? I would be rather careful as in our experience (as non-Catholics) we noticed more emphasis on myth versus proven facts on some of our explorations into some of Rome's "sacred" sites for their archeological/historical value. Legends are fine but when $$ is involved, I think it's important that they are honest about what has been proven or not.

Vox Mundi is the Vatican's official tour operator for St Peter's basilica so that would be a good one for you:

For the scavi underneath St Peter's, you would probably be interested in this:

Most Roman churches can be visited for free, and those with holy relics especially important to pilgrims can be identified with some easy internet searches, such as....

It's better to obtain recommendations from you and other travelers who have experienced the tours. So thanks for your input and these websites.

If others have more info to share, I would appreciate learning about your experiences with touring churches or even pilgrimages in Rome.

Sarah Murdoch, who is one of Rick’s Italy guides, did a blog post on a tour she did with The Catholic Traveler. He took her to some interesting churches and it was clear she was learning some new and interesting stuff.

Her blog with Rome guide information:

I did a quick search on her blog but couldn’t find the video post about this tour. Sorry I’m on my phone, battery is low, blahblah!! Maybe you will have better luck on a search!

I have not done a tour with this person but I’d go with anything Sarah suggested.

Ooh, Pam mentioned The Catholic Traveler (nice work, Pam)? That's another resource although one that no one here may have personally used for a tour. Here's a day tour he offers of the "Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome":

You could contact him for arrangements/more info? This is a private tour and at €600 (for the tour, not per person) not an inexpensive one but it is an option.

Here's another one that still covers some very nice churches but at half the cost of the one above:

A little about Mountain (AKA The Catholic Traveler):

Kathy, thanks for boosting this up. At the laptop now so did some searching and realized she had probably posted her tour on Youtube and bingo.

Here is the clip:

I've got this tour guide on my list for my next (not yet planned) visit to Rome. I'm not Catholic but he sounds so interesting! In my estimation if he is showing Sarah things she's not been to then that just sounds fascinating.

I'll agree that he sounds like an interesting fella, Pam!
He's been around awhile too so I wouldn't question the quality of his tours.
