I have narrowed the choice down to 5 hotels that are relatively cheap for my daughter and I. The web sites are not very good with info and pictures. Could you help me pi/ck one? We are fine with sharing a bathroom this one time. They are:
Albergo Guerrato/ Albergo Doni/ Hotel Riva/ Hotel Galleria/ Ca'San Trovaso/ Foresteria della Chiesa Valdese
Thank you
Guerrato is RS's favorite place in Venice. We stayed there in 2003 and it was our favorite lodging in the whole month that we were in Italy. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. (They speak English.) We did a room without a bath as well and were pleasantly surprised to find a sink in our room anyway. It came in very handy to do a little laundry and to brush our teeth. It's a very old building with all the charm that entails. The floor was terrazzo and had been worn down over the centuries so that the center of the room was lower than the edges. Not a problem - just interesting. Excellent location as well.
Michael, thank you. That's just the sort of info we need. Sounds great. Any one else?
I'm not familiar with the hotels that you've listed but we've stayed two times at the Albergo Marin. I like it because it's "off the beaten path" in a quiet neighborhood near the train station. Some bathrooms are shared. You can see photos of the rooms at www.albergomarin.it
We stayed at Guerrato last year and would definitely stay there again. They do have rooms with bath if you like. Just be prepared to walk up stairs. It is very close to a great local food and fish market and also a shopping street used by locals. There is also a vaporetta stop by the market that is much closer than the one at Rialto. Contack me directly if you need more specifics.
Thank you everyone. I have a request in to Guerratos. I probably will contact you again

I'd recommend Hotel Riva, although I haven't stayed in any of the others. It's close enough to St. Marks that it's still centrally located. It's chock full of Venetian charm! And Sanrdo is a very charismatic owner.
Ive stayed at Doni twice and liked it.It is well located and well run. They have rooms under 100e with shared bathroom. They are very clean and while we prefer inroom we manage just fine at Doni.
We stayed at the Hotel Galleria in Sept. and found it delightful. We had to share the bath as we were late making reservations but there was never anyone else using it. We had room 3 with a view of the canal and the bridge. It was fun to eat our in room breakfast and watch the boats and people on the bridge. I think it was 110 euros. The location is great. Have a good trip.
Melanie,
Last May (2007) my husband and I stayed at the Fondazione Levi, near the Accademia Bridge. Rick Steves recommended it and it was great, nothing fancy, but clean and comfy! It was so great that we are going back this May and staying there again. One large room with large bath (for Italy) with two twin beds is 105 Euros. They also offer a breakfast spread. I loved the location, you get to see the Grand Canal everday, but not hear it, its in between the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Square so sightseeing is easy, and you have your own vaporetto stop minutes from your room. I highly recommend it for you and your daughter.
Just got back from Italy. Stayed in Pensione Guerrato in Venice and it was easily the best hotel of our trip. Plenty of rooms w/bath, great location, decent price, great breakfast.
