Recent Trenitalia changes- will they impact us?

We always travel on the local (cheapest) Trenitalia tickets. Usually, we buy tickets at as soon as we arrive at a station for our next destination, usually a few day before hand (so we don't have to go back to the station early). But I hear Trenitalia has recently made some changes. Does anyone know if we now need to specify the date and time of the specific local train we want? If so, how will we do this? We'd still like to buy the tickets ahead if possible. Thank you for your help!

You have to specify the day of travel when purchasing regionale trains tickets, but not the time.

Hence you still have to time-stamp locally purchased regionale tickets, but you can board any regionale doing that route on that specified day.

Tickets are nowadays only valid for the specified day. And the ticket must be used within a certain time after validating. (I'm not sure whether it's 2 or 4 hrs.)
You can choose the travelling day on the ticket machines, so it's still possible to buy them ahead.

Thanks for the information. We will be traveling from Roma to Napoli. I noticed when I look at the Trenitalia site that everyday, there are several local trains, but they have different prices. Do we have to only take trains that cost the specific amount that we paid, or can we also take a cheaper ones? Thanks again.

Personally I wouldn't pay EUR 27 for an Intercity and travel a Regionale which costs EUR 11,80, but I don't think the ticket collector would object.

As long as the cheaper train doesn't require an assigned seat/reservation, you should be fine.
