Recent interaction with Auto Europe UK website?

I'm looking for a car rental for one week in October, to tour Tuscany. I had read the tip that the Auto Europe UK site quotes cheaper prices than the USA site, so I searched both. The car I'm looking at is 273 GBP versus 1,500 USD! Is this just too darn good to be true? I'm skeptical about moving forward with the reservation...has anyone from the USA rented through the Auto Europe UK site with good results? Thanks!

Megan, I think if you post your question on either the transportation section or on the Great Britain section you might get a reply as it looks like you are trying to rent car in GB. Good luck.

Sorry, it looks like my original question was unclear. I'm searching for a car rental for one week in Italy, picking up and returning in Rome at FCO. I searched the Auto Europe UK and Auto Europe USA websites for pricing and received two VERY different quotes. The UK website quotes 273 GBP (which is under $500 USD), while the USA website quotes $1,500 USD, for the same car in the same period renting at the same location. My question is whether anyone in the USA has booked a car through the Auto Europe UK site with good results. The lower price just seems too good to be true.

It does seem too good to be true, are they exactly the same coverages such as CDW, fees etc? Have only rented through regular autoeurope so can't help with the UK one, just suggest you be sure everything seems the same. $1500 seems like a lot for a week but we never rented car in Italy either. Good luck.

Megan, are you looking to rent a super expensive car or something? $1500 seems extremely high & there must be a mistake (unless you're looking to rent an expensive sports car or something). I can't see that it would cost more than $500 or so for a week. We paid around $300 for 4 days in 2009. We picked up the car in Siena & returned it in La Spezia. Try calling the US number again & start over and ask for a quote.

We are renting a minivan, since we have 6 in our party, so the price is definitely higher than a compact or economy car.

$1500 still seems excessive for a mini-van for a week. Maybe two smaller cars would be better? I have seen price disparities between Auto Europe UK and US sites, but never anything this huge... which makes me suspect it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. My advantage: I have UK and US licenses. Have never tried to book through Auto Europe UK and use a US license when I arrived. That might be problematic. Mathew

I agree, it seems like a huge difference. I (living in the U.S., U.S. citizen) rented a car through AutoEurope's Canadian website two years ago with no problems. I called the (Canadian) 800 number, though, to make sure everything was set up the way that I wanted. I do remember that I checked out all their different country websites to figure out the best rate. If you're not sure, call them - we've rented from AutoEurope for years, with very good results.

Having always rented from AutoEurope as a U.S. citizen, I was very curious to what you have found out ref the different price quotes. I just used their website and received the following quotes for a rental from the Rome airport, for the dates October 10-17 and for a Fiat Ducato (van): U.S. price is $1,412.87, U.K. price is 522 GBP or $854.00 and the Canadian citizen price is $1,333.74 (Canadian dollars?). Now, the question is, can you really rent the car posing as a U.K. citizen? As a previous poster pointed out, do we need a driver's license from that country? I'm sure we probably need a legit address for the U.K., right? Good questions and now I'm very curious if this would work. Please post what you find out.

Megan, I just rented from AE/UK in June for our trip in Spain. I rented from them after reading Tim, from Knoxville's post: "I just rented 2 minivans in Germany from www.autoeurope.eu which had greatly discounted rates over www.autoeurope.com When I picked up my car they didn't mention anything at all about my USA drivers license. I wouldn't worry about it." The price I got was really good also, in fact it was "all inclusive:, and was still cheaper that AE/US; but ..........MAKE SURE THAT YOU READ THE FINE PRINT! I had to pay $100EU, up front, "to have a full gas tank at the beginning and return it with an empty tank". They said that this fee varies by the size of the car; ours was a small Ford wagon. This probably cost us an extra $60 to 70 EU, because there is no way that you are going to bring a car back with an empty tank, and....... it only cost to $70 to fill up the tank when it was almost" bone" dry. They also charged us a $38? "drop off fee." But even after I added up all of the fees their price was better....marginally. One more thing; the all-inclusive insurance did NOT cover glass and tires...go figure. Our rental was with "Gold Car." One of the other couples at one of our hotels got stuck with a Stick shift when they had a reservation for an automatic with Gold Car. We had no problems with our car or the process picking it up or droping it off; I didn't have to speak with funny accent , and they did not require a UK drivers license....just our credit card. The bottom line is; do the math, and Caveat Emptor!
