reccomendations??? Venice to Naples or to Florence?

going to Rome for 7 nights and then to Venice for 3 nights all scheduled...
except have 5 days after that, thinking about going to Naples from Venice (fast train) my wife says it seems more lively than Florence (she gets burnt out on museums after awhile).

Is it worth the 5 + hour train trip, and back to Rome? spend 3 nights in Naples and 2 last nights in Rome close to the airport?
or Just go to Florence?

we would like to see the best of the North and South but maybe asking to much and to much time loss.
any personal insights or thoughts would be appreciated.
Grazie

Considering the distance from Venice to Naples and the time required to get there, and then get back to Rome for the trip home, you'll lose a great deal of time in transit. Personally I'd opt for one more night in Venice and then four nights in Florence. If you get tired of Florence (unlikely) you can do several days trips from there. Just a thought

Could you add a night or 2 to Venice? There's more to do and see than museums there. I'm not a big fan of Naples but I love Sorrento and use it every year as a home base - Capri, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii. It does make for a very long group of train rides (Venice-Florence-Rome-Naples on the Freccia fast trains and then the local Circumvesuviana to Sorrento adding up to more than 6 hours) - which might make Florence more appealable. From Florence you could day trip to Siena which also has more to see and experience than museums (but I wouldn't skip the Duomo!). Lucca is also doable as a day trip from Florence. You have options but whatever you decide I suspect you might want to spend the last night near the airport if you have a flight back to the States in the morning.

If you are going to the amalfi coast then I would say you would need at least 3 nights there to make it worth it. If you are considering Naples, I would go to Florence over Naples! From Florence you can go on day trips to Tuscany which is beautiful!! So much to do!

Another suggestion would be to take the train to Verona for 2 nights. A lovely city and easy walking. and then train on to Florence 2 nights, train into Rome then on to an airport hotel.

Thank you for all the suggestions, were cancelling Naples, but now my wife is thinking maybe we should spend more time in Venice 5-6 nights, and a 2-3 in Florence (plus a day trip to Siena) before we head out of Rome. What do you think?

the more pics of Venice my wife see's, she just wants to just stay there :)

That sounds like a much better plan. Spending five or six nights in Venice will give you plenty of time to really see Venice and perhaps do a day trip to Murano / Burano or Verona. Understand the wife wanting to stay in Venice. It is truly unique and one of our favorite places. Two or three nights in Florence should be good for one who is not really into museums.
