Reasonable hotel in Venice(!) with balcony?

We are a family of 5, so will probably end up having to book 2 rooms. Is being on a canal worth the added expense? We will only be there one night. Any specific suggestions?

Considering you're only there 1 night I would rather use the extra money for a water taxi and forget the balcony.

Personally, Jen, with very limited time in Venice, given that you will be coming from the cruise ship port, and leaving Venice from the train station, Instead of a balcony, I would consider my top priority to be easy access (= easy walking distance) to the train station, with the added possibility of leaving your bags for free at the hotel if needed, rather than checking bags for a per bag fee at the train station, and worrying about the length of the line to check and pick up your baggage. I'm sure there are various such hotels at varied costs, including recommendations in the RS books! But I myself happen to be staying in one in late May, which is the highly rated Ca dei Polo at www.cadeipolo.com. I don't know the hours the desk is staffed and how that might impact leaving bags, but you could inquire about that of any hotel you deal with. Good luck! I'm sure you will enjoy your time in beautiful Venice.

I agree forget the balcony. If you only have 1 night you'll be out exploring and getting lost all day and will only need to sleep in your room. I'm staying near the train station in a suitable room (stayed there before) that's very reasonable and the rooms do have balcony's.... they're just not a canal view.

Thanks, everyone! I decided (after MANY days of searching all the hotel comparison sites) & searching forums/topics for advice, to go with a midprice hotel with luggage storage, easy access to the vaparetto stop, that's pretty close to St. Mark's (for sightseeing). Hotel Ala. It was recommended many times, and I could get a canal view room for DH & I and a "regular" room nearby for the kiddos. For one night it ended up to be just over $600, which is shocking that that is "midprice"...ah, Venice!
