Assuming you're going to lose days arriving and departing Italy to US and boarding and leaving the cruise, it sounds like you only have 9 or 10 days on the ground, and you're going to lose one-half to one day each time you relocate. I'd suggest staying on the cruise until it returns to Rome, spending the time before the cruise seeing Rome, maybe with a trip to Venice (sad to do that as a day trip; I'd suggest at least overnight and giving it 2 days), and spending the time after the cruise in CT and picking one central town for exploring a little of Tuscany. Even with that, you're not goign to have much time in each place. So it depends on how you like to travel; this much moving would make me sad about what I'm missing in each place, but some folks like this type of trip.

Davids plan is not bad,, but I vote for only one night in Venice,, its expensive and really you just want to see it, not spend all your money there before the rest of your holiday, lol Two nights max..

I don't agree. Pat. Venice is no more expensive than Rome. We've stayed in B&Bs and apartments there for €90-95 per night, and take care to eat in local places, generally averaging less than €80 per day for food. Venice is a wonderful place to start your trip and 3 nights is well advised or you'll feel short-changed. In Venice try to eat at La Zucca. Advanced reservations a must so call from the states before you go.

Larry, I stayed at a convent in Venice and although the rooms were simple (buffet breakfast and private bath included), there was a beautiful garden outside and the staff was extremely helpful. I found them through monasterystays.com. There's a curfew but I think it's 11pm or midnight. The room was about 70 euro single. I also think two nights or more in Venice would be best.
