Re using Lecce as a base for traveling around the area

Coming to Puglia for first time in late April. As part of our trip, planning to use Lecce as a base for three days and, in addition to visiting the old city, will use our rental car to explore other towns in the area as well. Do you think we should stay inside the old city or outside? And if outside, we’d appreciate hotel suggestions. (which would still enable us to easily walk into the old city area.)
Looking forward to hearing suggestions for nice hotels. Thank you.

Ciao..last year I stayed solo 6 nights in Lecce..inside the old city..and used it as base. I loved it..I loved coming back after my tour days to a beautiful, walkable, interesting vibrant town w a very local vibe. I stayed at Palazzo Marasgallo which was right in the center..lovely breakfast..amazing rooftop patio. Pugliese food is delicious and I found small local places on my own. I did not have a car and hired out for day tours. Hope this helps!

Thanks Linda, sounds great.. except for the car part. We will definitely have a car, so we need to include that issue in our plans.

I am interested in any feedback. I will also be there in April and so far have an Airbnb outside with a 15 min walk. Main reasons were reviews, easy to park and easy to leave for day trips but also could walk into town. Open to ideas.

Inside the walls is just more fun! Our bnb was right inside the wall with a parking lot just on the other side of the wall —- this was so many years ago that I hesitate to recommend it now. But look for a place to stay near parking using Google Maps.
