Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo

My 19 year old son is traveling this Saturday morning from Ravenna to the airport in Venice to fly home - 12:15 mid-day flight. The only way I know to do this is to take the train to the station in Venice and then take the #5 bus from the bus terminal near the train station out to the airport. I guess there's also the Alilaguna water bus but that takes a while.
I have a feeling there is a more direct, efficient route from Ravenna to the airport?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Get off at Venezia Mestre and get the bus there to the airport. That saves a lot of walking and maybe about a half hour. Is it a flight directly to North America, or changing planes yet in Europe?
He'll need to be on the 6:25 train to Ferrara and change to the train to Venice. arriving at Venezia Mestre at 9:06. That will probably be sufficient, but if he has any issues with finding the bus, better just bite the bullet and get a taxi. Ideally he should be at the airport by 9:15 for a flight to North America, but Venice is a small airport and 9:45 should be OK.

you could take Flixbus to Venice Mestre Train Station from Ravenna and then the bus from there.

https://www.flixbus.com/

Flixbus Ravenna to Venice Mestre Train Station takes 3 hours.
The bus from Venice Mestre to Marco Polo takes 15 minutes more or less

to make it fool proof maybe go the day before the flight and spend the night by the airport

It is the No 15 bus at 9:30 and it gets to the airport at 9:54. That might be good enough. But to be safe, tell him to just get a taxi to the airport. Should be in the 20 to 25 EUR range. Its only about a 15 to 20 minute drive

Flix bus leaves too late (8:40). Take the train.

The train ticket is 13.80 EUR and the bus is 8 EUR. The bus tickets can be bought at a bunch of tabacchi (news stands) inside Mestre station. Remind him to always be sure to validate his tickets before getting on the train in Ravenna, and for the bus inside the bus.

Further information: the 6:25 train originates in Ravenna, so he should get there 15 minutes early and he can board the train as soon as it is spotted on the platform. To save time, he should buy the ticket on Friday, today, but be sure to tell them it is for a train on Saturday. The ticket will have to be used on that day.

The bus is outside the Mestre station about 1000 feet walk to his right as he exits the station. It will be blue and have "AEROBUS" written all over it. Here is a pic.
