A couple of years ago we hired a private guide in Sardinia and she showed me a printed schedule of hourly and daily rates for guides. I am wondering if this is how it works in other parts of Italy. I was recently quoted 85 euros per hour and a daily rate of 500 euros in the Venice area.
Three years ago we paid €170 for a 3-hour bespoke tour of the Pompeii archaeological site, conducted by an English-speaking archaeologist (who provided us with a bona-fide tax receipt). They were excellent—and professional throughout. I'd guess that it'd be nearer to €200 by now.

I think it’s also important to understand that a licensed tour guide is different than a driver, and their fees are separate. Cost will depend on what kind of “tour” you’re inquiring about.
I do not think you will find regulated rates, it really is what the market will bear, and sites that list a price, and likely get it, or privately negotiate a rate.
Find ten different offers, you might get an idea of what is typical in an area.
As stated above, the rates vary, and it depends on what you want and are looking for. We have used the site ToursbyLocals a number of times, in various countries including Italy. For each guide, you can see the exact rates for the number of hours they offer their services for. I feel that the rates vary primarily based on the location (for example, Venice vs. a small town in a non-touristy area), and also what kind of qualifications you want your guide to have. For example, someone with a history, art, or archeology degree and background.
April 2025: 4 people. pickup/dropoff Salerno, a big van that took us to Vietri sul Mare, Ravello, Minori. 6 hours, $400 total, cash. Pricey but well worth it.

Up to a certain point. An official guide has to have at least an upper school grade, pass an examination and register with the Tourism Ministery. They are likely to have regional price guides.
As for unofficial guides... I read the story of an unofficial guide in Florence that simply made up all his stories. It went on for several years. After all, if you do not know a little history and art, how can you tell the true from the false?
It seems that a private guide can be VERY expensive.
We have been to Italy many times and NEVER paid for a private guide.
You can do a lot of touring on your own with a good guidebook and doing your own research for transport.
Of course, for some key sites like in Rome, the Sistine Chapel, Coliseum and Forum you need to book the admission in advance.
For extensive travel consider taking group tours. Some limited to small numbers.
I've only used private guides a few times at major sights.
But I have hired drivers to take me from place to place in areas not well served by public transportation. The drivers have the NCC license, which allows them to drive you, but they are not official guides. For me this did not matter. Driving from place to place, the driver was a marvelous font of information on so many aspects of local life.....I can't even describe how great these drives were.... we would make up an itinerary and hire the driver for the day, or half day......usually they did not accept our invitations to lunch, but waiter with the car while we ate.....
I've never done this in Venice but in Sicily we never paid more than 400e for a full day of traveling... I think prices vary a lot by region, because Ii checked my notes and we paid about 400 from Sorrento to Matera a few months ago, with a few stops...and that trip was completed within one morning....
But I wonder about having a private guide in Venice..within the city, or will you venture out of Venice itself?
hey hey bill
another option to check out is:

Working as a guide I can tell you that are not existing official rates for touristic guides. The cost for (group or private) tours is depending by the length and mostly by the area where you are doing it. As general average rule you could assume 50/60€ per hours for a legal authorized guide. In very touristic cities (like Venice, Milan, Rome) the rates are much higher, somewhere else could be lower. On top of that you must add the cost for tickets, radios and/or tastings if required.
If the cost could look high, remember that a legal guide pays at least 17% for Healthcare and 10% of Income Taxes. On top of course of all other expenses to reach the place of the tour (tickets, fuel for the car, parking...).
I remember even that a Touristic Guide is an official job in Italy and you need an authorization to do that: you have to pass an exam about art, history, culture and so on before being licensed.
Being a driver with a car is a completely different kind of license.
A person of course could have both licenses, but aren't so many. If you are doing a job without a license in Italy you could be fined and could be fined even the organization who hired the illegal worker.
Thanks everyone for the information. It seems 85 euros per hour for Venice is in the ballpark. There will be 8 of us, so the cost will be spread out. We have found using a local guide, either private, or as part of a group - like Overlord Tours in Normandy works very well for us.
