Rainy Day Activities in Taormina

We will be in Taormina Oct. 7th - 11th, and at this point, the weather isn't looking good. We're looking for suggestions of things to do when it's raining. I found a pizza-making class, which takes care of half a day, lol. Anything else anyone can suggest?

There really isn't much to do in Taormina for more than 1 - 1.5 full days even in great weather because it's so small. But you can't really rely on the weather forecast this far out to begin with. If you're in doubt about having enough to do, maybe stay a few days in Siracusa instead? There are more things to do indoors, like the excellent archeological museum.

Actually our time there was pretty much filled up, and some things we can still do. I'm just not sure about Etna, the Alcantara Gorge, the Godfather tour, or driving up the winding road to Castelmola, in the pouring rain! We'll be going to Siracuse from Taormina, so I'm really just trying to find out what we could do in Taormina if it's really as rainy as it looks it will be.

If you like shopping, you'd be in luck because the main pedestrian drag (which takes about 10 minutes to walk) is full of small shops. Other than that, I think Mt. Etna would be even less attractive in the rain so that won't be a good option.

5 years ago we took a cooking tour of Southern Italy and Sicily. One of our stops was Taormina. Our favorite class was with Chef Massimo. It was a five hour experience starting with a market tour to pick up our ingredients. We prepared fish, Caponata and pasta. It truly was a market to table experience. We all enjoyed ourselves. One evening our chef guide took us to Da Cristina for the best Arancini we had in Sicily! Via Strabone 2.

As mentioned up thread, Taormina is a shoppers delight. Our guide directed us to her favorite jewelry store (Monili) Corso Umberto, 71. I bought a pair of earrings that have since been my favorite.

I agree, Mt. Etna may not be the best in rainy weather. We were there in the month of September and it had snowed a couple days prior. It ended up the weather cleared and we had a warm day.

Planning on returning to Sicily next year.

I think there's a good chance it won't be all that rainy in Taormina. Meteorologists seems to have a harder time predicting precipitation than temperatures.

There's a WWII museum in Catania. Unfortunately, I missed it. Catania's worth visiting for its historic district and food market, but neither would be at its best on a rainy day. The cathedral would get you indoors for awhile. There's both bus and rail service to Catania. The train departs from the Giardini Naxos station below Taormina.

A Sicilian recommended Acireale to me. Photos look promising, but I did not make it there, and I think it's more of a wander-around-outdoors place.

I'll be in Taormina at the same time, and also been following the weather. Outside of bringing a lightweight rain jacket, we will just figure it all out when we get there :-). I have often seen not so favorable weather forecasts for my travels, then get to the destination only to find the weather much better than predicted - hoping for the same here!
