Hello
Unfortunately the weather forecast for our Italy trip is a lot of rain. Hopefully that will change, but if not, does anyone have suggestions for rainy day activities in Ortisei? We will not have a car.
Thanks!
It is so hard to know about the weather forecast more than a day or two ahead of time in a mountainous area. Usually it rains only part of the day. If it is raining in the morning, the afternoon is better but if it is nice in the AM, get out and enjoy because afternoon clouds and late afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially if it gets warm. Also, I find local forecasts are usually more precise and dependable than what we see on Weather.com or AccuWeather.
There’s always Bolzano, a short trip by bus, but those buses get crowded on rainy days so take the first one, if you can. Or go late AM when there may be a lull. The museum in Bolzano is fantastic. I don’t know if you can reserve in advance but that would be good to check.
In light rain or on overcast days it is still feasible to do some walks. S. Cristina has a town walk, the Raida dl Leuch, and there is the walk between the villages along the Val Gardena Railway trail that is nice. (Great pizza in S.Cristina at La Tambra!) You can also visit the WWI train museum there.
There is quite a bit of good shopping in Ortisei. I would check the hourly forecast too! It may only be rainy in the afternoon.
One of our best memories from our trip was hiking to Seceda hiking downhill to one of the huittes as it started to rain. Stayed in there sipping hot chocolate as we waited for the rain to clear - hiked downhill later.
You can also make the trip over to Bolzano. Dress for the weather, as long as it’s not thundering and a torrential downpour, you could likely still take a walk or hike. The beauty of the place is still all there for you to see, rain or shine.
I'd recommend exploring the woodcarving tradition of Val Gardena. We were rained out on our first visit years ago and spent the day hopping between studios and shops. There is also a woodcarving museum in the heart of Ortisei that is worth visiting. It's a fascinating art form that is a livelihood for many South Tyroleans: https://throneandvine.com/val-gardena-wood-carvings-south-tyrol/
Maybe the spa in Merano? We haven't been yet but this on my trip plan for next summer. :)
w/o a car, you'd need to bus to Ortisei and then train to Merano it looks like.
Take a look at Santre spa just outside of Brixen. A highlight of our trip! Brixen was stunningly beautiful as well, great shopping and the abbey just outside of town was a great day out.
thank you all for the great suggestions!
