Rain in Dolomites :(

I know I shouldn't look this far out, but it's looking like 3 days of rain (heavy showers) when we're scheduled to be in Ortisei. I will be so disappointed - especially if the mountain tops are covered by clouds and fog.

For those who have been there, is the rain they get all day type of rain, or periodic showers? I'm hoping to photograph that amazing area, and would love to see the sun rise/set shining on the Dolomites, like I've seen in pictures.

Thanks-
Theresa

Rain in the Alps can go any way. It can pour on all day long, it can come in punctated waves, or it can suddenly hit then clear up just as quickly.

Unfortunately, you're in the hands of the Alpine weather gods with this one, and they're a fickle bunch. All you can really do it budget as much time as possible and hope for the best.

So many times as we have prepared to go somewhere I see the weather and fret, usually for no reason, as it is almost always better than forecast. Many times we've seen rain in the Dolomites in take morning, and by afternoon we were basking in sunshine. Plan for the worst and hope for the best!

we were in Val Gardenia a few years ago in October, rain one day, sleet and snow the next, sun the third, the thing is it was over the top beautiful the day it rained, the day it sleeted, and the day it was sunny. Don't sweat it, you'll be awestruck whatever develops, we took the Col Riser up the mountain and hiked back down in the rain and it still is one of my most memorible days with my wife and son, take your rain gear and have a blast.
