Rain in Cinque Terre

Ciao!

I have a trip planned for Milano - Cinque Terre - Paris starting 1 Oct. Weather forecast looks bad for rain, possibly thunderstorms in Cinque Terre. Anyone have experience in vacationing in Cinque Terre with rain? Or is it worthwhile to escape to a close by city like Firenze for better weather? The group is myself, my wife who is at end of 2nd trimester, and elderly in-laws. Plan was always to take it slow and easy, but don’t want to be cooped up inside the whole time when we could be exploring other places and revisiting Firenze.

Grazie Mille!

Bonjourno! I'm actually sitting in our rented apartment enjoying watching the rain soak the main square in Vernazza right now. It's still gorgeous.... that said, we splurged and got a place that looks over the square and harbor so we're can still enjoy views and the din of activity below even if stuck inside. If you are planning to do any of the hiking paths, then you could get rained out (the trails are closed for safety today), and I'm waiting to see if the ferry is running today. Otherwise, places are open, trains are running, and folks are grabbing their umbrellas and ponchos and living life.

I’m in Bologna right now, and heavy thunderstorms this afternoon, evening, and through the night are forecast for Cinque Terre, Rome, Florence, Umbria, Bologna . . . pretty much all of Italy, it seems. So we’ll be finding out. Firenze might not be an escape from wet weather if it’s also pouring in the Cinque Terre, although there are so many indoor museums.

You can't accurately predict the weather in Cinque Terre even a day ahead. It changes quickly and often the specificity is insufficient for your purposes. The predicted weather for today the 26th, for example, is an orange alert for 'temporali' meaning heavy showers - issued just after midnight! This alert level is serious and restricts some activities and closes schools due to the chance of flash flooding. For diversion in a prolonged rain, La Spezia has enough to entertain and it's a quick train trip. There's a good art museum and an excellent naval museum and an archeological museum in a castle that's pretty interesting.

In Florence now & had a big storm this afternoon, but it’s lovely now. Figured I’d venture out the a place close by (Piazza Della Republica) & though I miss the outside seating, I can still people watch from my seat inside!). Heading to Cinque Terre in a few days rain or shine, but it really depends on what you are happy doing (or not).

Thanks for everyone’s input. I think we will just proceed with caution and play it by ear. As always, a positive attitude is probably most important to having a good vacation.

According to RAI news today, Liguria is having some really bad weather right now, and they showed some footage of flooding that looked quite serious and really heavy rain on the motorways. Of course, that doesn't mean the same weather will be there during your trip. In the same situation I'd probably continue with the plans, but have a backup option.

Buon Viaggio!

As it turned out the weather in Liguria was unpredictable in the extreme, and hopefully the OP avoided the area. A new Italian rainfall record of 20 inches in 6 hours was set from Sunday-Monday in Savona province, 60 miles NW of Cinque Terre, and the event is still continuing: https://www.genova24.it/. Cinque Terre has been in orange alert since Sunday.

In Monterosso now & only had a few minutes of light rain today so far. The sea is rough & it’s overcast, but little rain. That said a good number of shops & restaurants are closed that were open yesterday. Not sure if Monday is sometimes a closed day or if it’s all due to the weather forecast.

We’re in southern Tuscany right now, along the coast south of the Cinque Terre. Yes, Monday is when most sights and museums are closed, along with lots of businesses. Even gelato shops are closed! The gelateria in Donostia was totally shut today, but we found one open in Suvereto.

Getting back to our lodging at a quarter past 7 tonight, there was the most fierce thunderstorm - fascinating and frightening at the same time. Knocked out power in parts of the area. The Original Poster probably got some rain - hope it didn’t ruin things.
