I am trying to plane our train travel from Venice or Mestre to Vienna. I see that there are two sets of schedules: one from mestre changing in austria for Vienna, the other from Vienna with a different schedule to Vienna. We would like to take a day train, so we can see where we are traveling. any recommendations? Thank you!

I'm looking at both Trenitalia and www.bahn.de. No trains to Villach/Vienna until 15:41. There are bus runs from the Tronchetto in Venice to Villach hbf beginning at 9:20am. At Villach, you transfer to a train that will take you to Vienna. Arrival time for this run is 17:36. There are other bus runs at 11:20 and 13:20. Total journey time is 8hrs16mins on the bus runs. If you wait until the train run at 15:41, the journey time is 14+ hours. The second train is a night train. Arrival time is early the next day.
