We would like to get to Montalcino from Milan as simply as possible. Has anyone done rail route from Milan to Siena? If so, what have been your experiences? Thank you!

The train ride to Siena from Milan will take you 4.5hrs. All runs change trains in Florence. The train station in Siena is a short distance from the town. One alternative is to take the train from Milan to Florence and then take the SITA bus from Florence to Siena. Buses pull up next to the city wall. SITA has very nice express buses to Siena. The SITA bus terminal is a long block from the Florence train station (it's not the bus terminal adjacent to the train station - those are local buses).

Thanks Larry. I forgot to mention that we are will be traveling on a Sunday. Do you know if the schedules are same? I see from the rail map that we pass through Bologna. Do you know if we need to switch trains in Bologna?

The train from Milan to Siena is very easy. Go to this website to find train schedules: www.bahn.de At the top right corner put in "English." Then a page comes up and you say where you are starting from and where you want to go. They will bring up the schedule, then you can click at the bottom left "More Details" and it shows you where you stop and change trains. I print the final page and bring it with us on trips. It's a very helpful website.

The train from Milan to Florence does indeed stop at Bologna However, there is not a train change there. There is at Florence for all runs that I see. Additionally, on some runs, there is an additional train change at Empoli. You can see the train changes in a column entitled, oddly enough, "Change Station".

CLICK HERE and see the schedule. And, it's a Sunday schedule althought they change every 90 days - but usually not by much.
