My wife and I are planning to spend two weeks in Italy this May. I am trying to determine if it would be best for us to buy a two week rail pass with five travel days, or purchase the individual tickets. I've gone to the Trenitalia website and gotten train departure/arrival times, but I am unable to access pricing. How do I obtain point-to-point pricing?
pick travel dates a few weeks out (rather than in May).
Hi Bruce-
I will be traveling through Italy for 2 weeks in October and posted the same question about a month back. Just about all of the responses were the same: it's cheaper AND easier to buy point-to-point tickets. I then went to try and price it out and it p-2-p did seem to be cheaper. So for me, I'm buying as I go. Hope that helped!
Bruce,
The best combination might be a combination of an inexpensive Rail Pass and some P-P tickets. The better option will be determined by exactly which rail journeys you plan on taking? A Rail Pass is often a good option for longer and more expensive journeys, while P-P tickets are good for shorter trips (especially in Italy). Keep in mind that even with a Rail Pass, you will need to pay extra for reservation charges on some trips (usually the high speed IC trains or similar).
If you know which rail trips you'll be taking, you might want to enter this into www.railsaver.com - the site will suggest the best combination of Passes and P-P tickets. The site provides a fairly good estimate.
Good luck and happy travels!
Hi Bruce
We are travelling to Italy in March and I had requested a quote and received a prompt answer from the following website: www.eurorailways.com
