Rail tickets Milan Centrale to Varenna and return

I think I know the answer to this (Yes), but wanted to make sure. We land at MXP and will take the Malpensa Express into Milan then heading to Cinque Terra for 4 nights. We will then train to Varenna for 3 nights then head back to Milan on the way to Lauterbrunnen. When we land at MXP and buy our Malpensa Express tickets for the train into Milan, can we buy our tickets there to/from Varenna, even though we won't take the trains for 5 and 8 days later? Once bought, all we'd need to do is then validate the tickets as we board for each trip? Thanks!

Jed,

Yes, you're correct. You can buy the tickets to/from Varenna at the airport train ticket counter when you buy your 'Malpensa Express' tickets.

The train to Varenna (from Milano Centrale) is a Regional ( Regionale) train & these type of tickets are valid for 60 days from the date of purchase. Once you validate the ticket, prior to boarding the train, the ticket is good for 6 hours.

Have a wonderful trip!

It is a good idea to buy your tickets for Varenna in advance because, if I remember correctly, it's not possible to buy tickets at the Varenna train station. So good thinking on your part.

Hi Jed, you may want to go ahead and buy the tickets for the trips you know are going to take on a specific day right now on the Trenitalia website: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en. I basically just returned from all the places you have listed on your itinerary and it was one less item to stress about during the trip. No need to validate the tickets when you purchase in advance either. Also, you might want to look into the options of taking a shuttle bus from Malpensa into Milan. I believe it was only 10 euro and they have storage underneath the bus so you don't have to hassle hauling all your luggage onto a crowded train. Takes about 50 minutes to get you to Milano Central station. Enjoy your trip ! Milan, Lake Como and the Cinqueterre were all magical places !
