Rail Strike April 22

I was planning to travel from Verona to Bologna on a regional train and then on to Rome on the Frecc on the morning of April 22 but now I see there is a 24 hr rail strike beginning April 21 at 9pm. Does anyone have any suggestions about the affect this will have and ultimately how I should get to Rome?

My wife and I were caught in Italy during a similar 24 hour strike. We ended up having to take a Eurostar train instead at a much higher cost (as we didn't book in advance). My suggestion would be to get a ticket with Eurostar in advance (assuming there are tickets for that route) or look into buses.

I too need to travel April 22. On the Trenitalia website there is a list of trains that are supposed to travel during a strike. I booked a "flexible" ticket for one of those trains. It is in the afternoon. I would prefer to travel at 10:00. I plan to go to the station at 10:00 to see if the train is running. If it is, I will try to change the flexible ticket to a 10:00 departure. If the train is not running at 10:00, at least I have a ticket to travel in the afternoon. I do not know how well this will work, but that is my plan. I would be interested to hear if other travelers have a better idea.

I was wondering about how the train strikes work as well. I have bought 2 tickets for travel from Venice to Florence and then from Florence to Naples already, getting some really great MINI fares. What happens if there is a strike that day? Do I lose my money or can I take a different train for the same price at a later time? I've heard that some trains will still run during a strike, but I'm not sure if they would accept my tickets. Anyone know?

If you booked a mini fare and your train is cancelled due to a strike, you should get a refund ( about a year from now, according to friends who had this happen). If you can find another train that is running, you will have to buy a ticket at the current price.

We were in Sorrento and here was a strike. We realize that being in Italy you have to take things in strive, relax. We met a lot of people while we all were waiting for the train strike to end. Do not go in the taxi they will try to get as much money out of you. Stand your ground get something to eat converse with people and time will go by and before you no it your on the train.

Kft421, I believe this was mentioned on your other Thread on this topic. Have a look at the Ron In Rome website for information on dealing with strikes. There will be some trains running, so if you have some flexibility in your travel times, you will eventually get to your destination. Cheers!

Just a follow up to this, I didn't know there was going to be a strike and was traveling from Frankfurt to Venice with a transfer in Munich. It was announced after we had boarded the train in Munich and was on our way that it had happened. They announced that Innsbruck Austria would be the last stop and we would have to get off the train at that point. Talk about your heart skipping a beat. Busses were provided that took us to Bolzano where we were told that we could catch a train from there. When we got to Bolzano, we were told there were no trains and to get back on the bus and they would take us to Verano. The bus stopped at a couple of train stations along the way where people got on as we made our way to Verano. When we got to Verona, there really was a train that we jumped on that took us the rest of the way. AMAZINGLY, we only arrived one hour later than we were supposed to arrive if nothing happened at all. I don't know what the view is like from the train through the Alps, but it couldn't be as beautiful as it was via the bus. It was one of the most spectacular days I have ever had travelling. If there was a way to schedule it to happen this way, I would recommend it to everyone. I think part of the experience was not knowing how far we would really get before we were forced to stop for the night then try to find lodging which didn't happen but it escalated the excitement. Anyway, just wanted to share.

That is much more exciting than our journey! We abandoned the train altogether and flew to Rome on Meridiana Fly. It all went off without a hitch. We were sorry to miss Bologna, but we threw a few extra coins in the Trevi Fountain in hopes of a next trip!
