We are traveling through Italy from December 27th 2008 - January 3rd 2009. I am a little nervous about reservations for our train because of the time of year. We're traveling from Florence to Rome on the 29th, Rome to Venice on the 1st, and Venice to Munich on the 3rd. Would anyone recommend reserving here in the states, or would we be ok waiting till we arrive in town and booking at the station? Anything helps, thanks.
No, you don't need to make the rezervations here in the US. Just do it at each train station.Allow some time before departure so you can figure out the machine and possible lines. Also don't foreget to stamp your tickets before you board the train. They will fien you, if you don't.
I am not sure how the international rezervations work at the ticket machines.
Thank you. I was hoping that was the case.
As soon as you get to Italy, go to a station and buy your Florence-Rome tickets and your Rome-Venice tickets. Ask for Amica fares (20% discount). If any of the allotted number of seats are still available, Amica fares are sold up until midnight of the day before departure.
Are you taking the direct night train from Venice to Munich or are you traveling during the day? With advance booking you can get discount fares on the night train and you may also be able to get discount fares for one or more of your daytime legs.
Florence and many other train stations have automated machines. MUCH easier and more convenient than waiting in line for an agent. The machines have english prompts available, and if you can use an ATM you can use these.
We're taking the train during the day from Venice to Munich. We have a railpass, so it's only the reservation fees and uncertainties we're worried about.
Thank you both for your info. My next question was going to be if I could reserve all my Italy trains from one station. I appreciate the help.
