Rail passes

I am leaving for Italy in 5 weeks. Do I still have time to order Italian rail passes on line and get them in time? Since 2 of us are going I am going to order the "saver" passes. Does anyone have experience with ordering these on line? Thanks!

The passes are printed in the US and sent via 2nd day air, so you have plenty of time to order them. You can purchase them from this web site click the "railpasses" tab at the top of this page.

Have you checked out buying point to point tickets once you get to Italy?

I'm still trying to make a decision about that. My order of travel is Venice, Florence, CT, Siene, Orvieto, Sorrento, Rome. I don't know how many of these will be high speed trains that require reservations ( and therefore standing in line to get them, even if I have the pass) and I'm also wondering if 1st class is worth the extra money. The difference is much less with a pass than with p to p.

We travel 2nd class unless its sold out, and don't think the extra money for 1st is worth it. Also on this forum I don't recall ever seeing anyone posting they've priced out point-to-point tickets and found the railpass to be a better value. Also you should keep in mind you can't get to Sorrento with the railpass (or Trenitalia); you can go as far as Naples, then you either take a different train system or a ferry.
