We're traveling from Frankfurt to Munich, staying a couple nights, and then onto Bozen to hike in the Alpe de Suisi. We are thinking about saving money by taking the bus from the airport in Munich to Bozen, instead of the train. Would this be difficult? Does anyone have experience with this bus trip? I think it's an express bus.
laura,
I'd prefer to take the train on that route (and have done so), as it won't be affected by traffic. On one of my trips, road traffic was almost at a standstill in the Brenner Pass due to construction work that was taking place. I was glad that I wasn't travelling by road on that occasion! The rail trip will be 3H:49M from Munich if you use one of the direct trains.
Where are you staying in the Bolzano area? You might consider staying in Castelrotto and then take the Bus to Alpi di Siusi for hiking (it's a short trip). If you decide to stay in Castelrotto, you'll have to take a Bus from Bolzano to Castelrotto (the bus station is about an eight minute walk from the Bolzano rail station).
Happy travels!
Thank you Ken. We plan to stay in Castelrotto, but have not found a place yet. I picked it from the travel recommendations. It will be a quick two night stay on the way to Rome, but I think it will add to our experience! I also would like to see the Ice Man. Any favorite hiking paths in the Alpe?
laura,
I stayed at Hotel Cavallino d'Oro in Castelrotto, and would absolutely recommend it. The rooms were very comfortable (and very distinctive), the staff was great and the food in the restaurant was good (dining seemed to be a bit of a "formal" affair). The station to catch the Bus to Alpi di Siusi is just a short walk down the hill from the hotel. One nice feature of the hotel is that they have a small Laundromat in the basement, as well as Spa facilities.
There's LOTS of hiking available in that area! One route you could consider would be to take the Chair Lift from Castelrotto up the hill to Marinzen (about 15 minutes) and then hike from there to Alpi di Siusi. According to THIS SIGN near the Cafe at Marinzen, that particular hike is only 1H:10M. From Alpi di Siusi, take the Cable Car down the hill and then the Bus back to Castelrotto. You won't have any shortage of beautiful hikes in that area, and hopefully the weather co-operates. For the hike, be sure to pack clothing for layering and I'd probably add some light rain gear (just in case).
Cheers!
