Rail and auto travel in Italy

We will be traveling in early May in Italy and would appreciate information/tips on best possible rail fares from Milan airport to Venice. We would also be taking the train from Venice to Florence and from Florence back to Milan. The plan is to use a car for touring Tuscany. Thanks for any suggestions. K

The cheapest fare on Italian rail is always the mini fare. I not sold out is available until midnight prior to day of travel. The discount varies depending on train and time of travel. It is a non-refundable ticket so plan carefully if using the mini fare. No discount on the train to Milan Central station. No need for advance reservations other than to take advantage of the mini fare.

The best compilation of info on Italian trains that I've found is here at Ron in Rome: Riding the Trains in Italy He tells you all about the fares as well as everything else you could possibly imagine. Happy travels.

Kent, For driving in Italy, note that each driver must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. Failure to produce an IDP if requested can result in fines on the spot! IDP's can easily be obtained at any AAA office for about $15 plus two Passport photos. Also, be sure to research the subject of Zona Traffico Limitato zones, which are especially prevalent in Florence (but present in other towns as well). EACH pass through one of the automated Cameras will result in a €100+ ticket, which you'll receive in the mail several months after you return home. I'd suggest opting for the best CDW / Insurance coverage. Also, a GPS along with a good Map would be prudent. You may find it helpful to read Ron's Excellent Website on the subject of "pitfalls" when driving in Italy. Happy travels!

your plan is good, use the trains and get a car just for Tuscany. Check train times, prices...at Trenitalia website.
for a car I use Auto Europe and only use outside of major cities.
