Ragusa and Modica

Looking for input, please!

We have 3 nights to spend in either Ragusa or Modica - I know they're close togeher, but we really want the Sicilian experience, and am trying to figure out where to spend our nights. One thing we love is to just wander around, especially at night, sitting in piazzas, majestic night time views, etc. Kind of like how San Gimignano was, and even a spot in Venice we found that was completely residential. Yet we don't want a place that compeltely shuts down at sunset, either. Nor do we want loud obnoxious hoards of people, either. We want that, "Oh, I just loved it there" feeling.

Opinions of either city, please?

Thank you in advance!

I would recommend Ragusa. We went to both last week. Modica was fun to visit the famouse chocolate shop, but Ragusa had so much more to see and do.

I think either one will give you the "Sicilian experience", neither is worse than the other or less authentic. Ragusa was a bit more visually striking to me, but they look similar (both cream colored Baroque towns built in the same style after the big earthquakes int he region). Do stop by the visitor center in Ragusa and get a large map with all the UNESCO sites (palazzos and churches), otherwise they are easy to miss. There are many of them. Ragusa has a lower and upper town and a gorgeous overlook between them. I believe you are traveling with an elderly family member, correct? Just be careful because both towns are quite hilly and it will be a strain in August with the added heat and the hilly-ness.

As someone who spent two nights in Ragusa and did a day trip to Modica, I would second staying in Ragusa and visiting Modica by day.

I echo what David said. We did just that on the Rick Steves Sicily Tour. At the time they were still staying in Ragusa (which I loved) and visited Modica, specifically a chocolate factory.
