Ok, I'm really struggling with this one and it shouldn't be that hard. We are taking a flight on May 6 from Catania and landing at the Naples Airport at 8:55am. I'm am trying to figure out the fastest route to Sorrento that won't cost me an arm and a leg. From what I understand there is a ferry that leaves at 10am and one at 11am. I have no idea if we can make it in time for the 10am, nor if the ferry will even run depending (I suppose) on the weather. That leaves the train option which is even more confusing. All of this, or course, is based on us somehow getting from the airport to either the train station or the ferry port. And, if we wait for the day we land to buy a ferry ticket (assuming good weather) will it be sold out. Can anyone help me sort this out?
Isn’t there a direct bus from Naples airport to Sorrento? We used a driver service.
If timing works out, there are direct buses from the airport to Sorrento using Flixbus or ANM, the regional bus company. They are a good option, as long as you do not need to wait an hour or two for the next bus.
Another popular option is a taxi to the main train station, then taking the Circumvesuvia train to Sorrento. Both Taxis and the train are frequent, so usually that is the quickest public transport.
The ferry is similar, taxi to the ferry port, but ferries are more infrequent.
Fastest of course would be a private transfer, or if you fall into a group of people going to Sorrento, hiring one of the vans that will tout rides for the group of you.
Take the Curreri coach bus; leaves right from the airport to Sorrento 8 times a day.

Taking the ferry would involve a transfer from airport to ferry port. The bus is a one-seat solution unless your hotel in Sorrento isn't within walking distance of the drop-off point. You'll probably have some wait time between flight arrival and the 11:00 bus but if you want easy, direct and economical, this is a good option.

How many is 'we'?
The ferry terminal is 5 miles from the airport, so a taxi shouldn't be a budget buster.
Unless you have checked bags that are the last ones off the plane, making the 10AM ferry is close but not impossible task
As I read this--- https://www.napoliunplugged.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Tariffe_taxi_2017.pdf
fixed rate taxi fare is 110 euro. Not know what the value of an arm and leg is, but not sure what would be faster.
We're a party of 5 and no checked baggage. My main concern with the ferry is that someone posted that it may not sail due to rough weather.
Use the Curreri Viaggi bus. 10€ p/p. 1H15m.

If you are worried about ferries not sailing, take a cab or a bus to the main railway station, called Napoli Centrale, walk underground and take the first Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento.
I'd also get a better travel guide about Naples and the Amalfi Coast. The links to the airport's official site and the Circumvesuviana should be on page 1 of every book about the area. They speak well about the guides written by some R. Steves.
For five people I would take a private car for about 100 euros. Or you could check Mondo tours, recommended in the RS guide, for a shared transfer. Sometimes convenience is worth it.
Safe travels!
Sorrento's own tourism website also recommends the Curreri bus under the "Getting Here" info:

Ok, I'm really struggling with this one and it shouldn't be that hard
It's not. Take a taxi from the airport to the ferry port and you will absolutely make the 11am ticket even if you miss the 10am one. It's not a far ride.
You should be able to buy a ferry ticket the day-of. If you can't, take a taxi to the train station and get on the circumvesuviana instead. Just be flexible! No need to stress
I would recommend taking a taxi to the ferry. We hired a driver from the airport to Sorrento and because of the curvy mountainous roads and heavy traffic I got motion sickness. Next time I will either take the ferry or the train.
If you take the ferry be aware that you will also need a taxi to get you from Sorrento port up to your hotel
That makes it a “3 seats” transfer
With a party of 5 that means a taxi van (not sure if availability at the port) or 2 taxis
Taxis in Sorrento are famously overpriced
There is a small bus from port up to town but I don’t know how frequently it runs or how crowded it might be.
There is also the elevator/walk option but the elevator is often not operating and it is a bit of a hike to get to it.
Where is your hotel in Sorrento?
Imperial Hotel Tramontano
Don't know why the ferry keeps getting referenced. It is a poor choice. The best choice is the direct bus. Second would be the train. All are cheap, easy to use, and convenient.
Have you asked hotel if they can offer a transfer?
Ferry keeps getting referenced because that’s what the OP asked about.
I agree that’s it’s the worst choice, just making sure OP knows why
Thanks, I appreciate the advice, especially about asking the hotel. I've already asked them to make dinner reservations and it didn't enen cross my mind to ask about the transfer.
Bertino, while it's possible that the hotel might organize a transfer, it definitely wouldn't be free if that's from the airport. Not sure if you meant a transfer from Naples, or from the Sorrento port or bus drop-off to your hotel.
If you take the ferry to Sorrento there is an elevator that you pay a small fee to go up to the Villa Communale park which is right by Imperial Hotel Tramontano.
Kathy,
The transfer I'm looking for is from Naples airport to Sorrento. I contacted the hotel and they will arrange for transportation from the Naples airport to Sorrento, but at a cost of 200 euros which seems high. So I will search for a more reasonable car service.
Bertino
We paid Monetti Taxi 150€ each way from the Naples train station or its surrounding area to the Imperial Hotel Tramontane. This was last week.
The hotel has its own elevator to the pier.
Great to know. What did you think of the hotel?
Did you check with Mondo? They have a section on their website for shared transfers.
Perhaps because you have five folks, the car services feel you need something bigger than a sedan..
200 euros is not necessarily high. Depending on who they use- if they may have to travel from Sorrento to NAP to pick you up and that increases the price.
I just looked at Mondo
www.sharedtrips.com
and they don't offer a transfer FROM the airport- all their transfers start in Sorrento then go to Naples, Rome, Pompeii etc.
We used this company and looks like their rate is around 170 euros.

Suntransfers quotes 132 euros- very reasonable.

I'm trying to find the website for Monetti Taxi but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone have a link?

We enjoyed the hotel. Our room wasn't the most modern we had ever had, but was clean, daily maid=service, quiet, and it overlooked the sea with a view of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. No complaints. Breakfast was abundant and varied, the breakfast area and staff were lovely. Hope you enjoy it.
They offer a meter-long package of pasta, waiting on the dresser, as a gift from the hotel. I had to crack the spaghetti in the package to fit the meter into my suitcase. It's 600gr, about 1.25 lb.
