quiet town in Tuscanny or Umbria

Two women going to Italy summer 2014. While i Italy we'll be travelling by train. (Venice for 5 days, Milan for 2 days, Florence for 5 days and Rome for 5 days) We have 4 days between Florence and Rome and would like to spend that time in a quieter, simpler location, from which we can take the train and/or bus to other hill towns. We had thought Siena, but I have a feeling the Siena during the last week of June is going to be really crowded. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked into Orvieto or Assisi? - I enjoyed them both and would consider them quieter easy walking around places.

Another vote for Assisi. We spent five days there in September, and would go back again tomorrow if we could. There are a lot of day-trippers along the main drag between Piazza Comune and Basilica di San Francesco; but otherwise the town is quiet and contemplative. Evening is magic. Photos here.

My husband and I had the exact same thoughts when traveling the same route last year. We stayed in Orvieto and loved it. It was easy to access by train and had a lovely time at our B and B and wandering through town! We wandered the city, ate great food and rented a car for a day to travel the countryside!
