Quickest transfer for family of 6 from FCO to Colosseum area

Hi,

My wife and I are traveling with our 4 kids (ages 5-14) in France and Italy this April. We land at FCO on April 10 at 4:40p (flying Ryanair from Marseille). At that time of day, what's the quickest way to get from FCO to the Colosseum area (where our accommodations are)?

Thank you!

John

John, with 6 of you I'd take a cab. Fixed fare is € 48,00 to locations "within the walls," which I'm sure your accommodations will fall into. There may be a small additional cost for luggage over a certain amount. Really, with 4 children to herd, this is going to be your EASIEST method!

Just be sure to use an official taxi and ignore any touts trying to get you into non-licensed vehicles. Some folks use pre-arranged driver services, such as romecabs, so I'm sure you'll get some suggestions for some of those as well.

@Kathy, thank you so much for the quick, insightful response. This is exactly what I needed! So, from your perspective, we won't have an issue getting a taxi that can transport all 6 of us? We're aiming to travel light--just travel backpacks for each of us--so luggage shouldn't be too overwhelming.

I just posted another question re: colosseum tickets that I'd specifically love to get your expertise on.

One last thing: sadly, we're only in Rome for about 24 hours on this trip...we're headed to Florence via Rome. We'll visit the colosseum and the forum the morning after we arrive before hopping on a train to Florence after lunch. What do you recommend that we do on the evening we arrive in Rome? Again, we're landing at 4:40p and need to get to the Colosseum area to check in. What do you think would be fun to do with our 4 kids that evening?

Thank you again!

Yo, John -
Gosh, I haven't traveled with a tribe myself - LOL! - but no, I don't think you'll have an issue. That said, it would be great to hear from the folks who have. Hopefully, some of them will chime in so just sit tight for the moment, OK?

I saw your Colosseum question and took a run at it. That darn site has made SO many changes over the past couple of years that I'm only half confident that my info is current/correct for about 5 minutes!

Arrival night? It'll take you a bit of time to get to your accommodation, checked in and settled so I'd limit evening activity to dinner and a lovely walk by some of Rome's landmarks, assuming the weather cooperates. I don't know what you'll have for a guidebook but most include self-guided walks, as does Rick's. He also has some free audio tours you could download to your own devices. Mom and Dad could give a listen and pass along the more interesting points to the kids orally.

You won’t have a problem
The taxi line up is well organized and there will be a taxi van available although you might need to wait a bit
Just tell the guy in charge you’ve got six and they’ll get the van if there isn’t already one lined up

We type the address we are going to on a piece of paper and hand that along with 50 euros to the driver
No need to tip but it’s usually just easier than fumbling with Euro coins
