We have a morning arrival at the Airport 30 April. On a previous visit, we took the Alilaguna water bus to Fondamenta Nuove, which was the closest dock to our hotel. This time we are staying very close to Piazza San Marco and we were wondering if the land bus to Piazzale Roma and then a Vaporetto would be a better option? Any advice would be appreciated.

The Linea Blu Alilaguna stops at San Marco.

Alilaguna Blue line does stop at San Marco but only after going the long way around so it's about 1:20-1:30 by the time it gets to San Marco. Doing the tourist trot of bus/taxi to the city and then vaporetto will probably be faster.
Speed and convenience-wise I would think about a taxi if you're two people and just take a cab if there is more than 2 people based on cost.

Bus to P Roma and then the number two around the outer Giudecca Canal is probably the second fastest and way way cheaper

how early is your arrival to VCE? do you have early check-in to hotel (2pm-4pm) or drop off bags and roam around?
economical is by alilaguna from airport to piazza san marco, look at times probably over an hour+ with stops along the way

under shuttle IN from airport to san marco, you would share a shuttle private water taxi with stops along the way, depending on where other people get off. read the rules, minimum of 2 people

private water taxi is quickest but not "economical" for what you want. we reserve ahead of time or walk down to dock. we always do this, splitting cost between 3 or 4 of us, dropping us as close to our place as possible. they load your suitcases, help you out of boat without crowds rushing, pushing/pulling you out
depends what's most important and a priority to you.
everyone has their own thoughts, i save extra money in my "GO GO" account for this ride and budget somewhere else. i spent a lot to travel and this will not break my bank to enjoy the wind & views cruising into gorgeous venice. good luck & enjoy
