My family will be in Venice for 2 days before heading off to the Dolomites and are trying to find a place to stay that is convenient to the popular tourist attractions. We are 2 adults with three teenage girls. Any suggestions that are midrange in price?
Jan - The Hotel Casanova is directly behind Piazza San Marco and easy walking distance to Rialto, The Grand Canal Area, and, of course, San Marco Square. Franco and Stefano are at the desk and the price is fair - Nothing in Venice is cheap; however, they give a very good price as well as a good breakfast buffet.
They will also have free tickets to go by Vaporetto or Water taxi to Murano to see the glass blowing and then on to Burano, a very picturesque Island specializing in lace and embroidery.
Ciao, Greg
Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.
We stayed at the Pensione Guerrato, right next to the Rialto Market. They fill up fairly quickly from what I understand, and have decent prices (esp if you pay in cash; inquire about that if you contact them). They are an elegantly furnished bed and breakfast with lovely antiques and Murano glass chandeliers. The staff are very nice and will let you keep your bags there on checkout day if you want to go sightseeing some more before leaving. www.pensioneguerrato.it
I second the Guerrato recommendation. Great location. Venice is actually pretty small and very easy to get around.
I like the Hotel Abbazia on a quiet calle (alley) near the central station off of La Lista di Spagna. The section is Canneregio. When I travel by train I prefer to stay 3 or 4 blocks from the station. The hotel is a former Carmelite monestery. Nothing in venice is cheap.
You can find this hotel on venere.com. It is a short vapretto ride fron Piazza San Marco. One person mentioned the island of Burano. We went there during the summer of 2008 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Buon viaggio,
